Extensions-yeah or nah?
Permalink Closed

I just recently got hair extensions and I LOVE THEM!!!!! But I live in a small town, and have been getting some wierd looks. They match my color, and theyre beautifully cut into loooong layers. They go bout halfway down my back,so its not like theyre freakish or anything. So this made me wonder, what do you guys think of someone getting  them?

I like them--if they look good.  If they look like Casey's from Laguna Beach, then NO!

If they look good - awesome!  It's the obviously fake, ratty nasty ones that should be outlawed!

Maybe those people that are staring are thinking "Wow!  She's got beautiful hair!"

If you don't mind my asking, about how much did they cost?  What kind of process did it take to get them?  Do they dye them to match your color?

Good questions. I was curious of the same thing. I have had extensions before.. but the glue-in kind. They only last about a week, before your head gets really itchy.. You arent really supposed to wash them too much.. so they start to look gross after a week or so anyway.

But I am interested in the others way that you can put them in.. sewing.. etc.

I am also obviously pro-extensions as long as they look nice!

I don't think there's anything wrong with them if they're done well.  Small towns can be weird like that.  My mom lives in a small town (near a small city, but still hickville, to me) and I get weird looks everytime I go out.  The other day, I was wearing gauchos, a cami over a racerback, a blazer and flip flops and I got the weirdest looks from several people (mostly middle aged women, but whatever).  I say, wear your extensions with pride!

I would say if they're good extensions (meaning, you can't tell they're extensions), then yay! If I had the money, I'd get those heat-bonded ones (they're like $2k or something ridiculous).

If we're talking the clip-in ones you can buy at the drugstore, then NAY.

i say yeah!  as long as they look good and aren't fakish.

my co-worker got extensions that were braided in.  they looked GORGEOUS in. but when she took them out, her fine/thin hair had taken a HUGE toll and she had a lot of breakage.

my other co-worker had some glued in for fun.  they fell out within two weeks (which is what they are supposed to do).  there were no issues with her hair.

and i had the individual ones in for a little while- which are the heat bonded ones that halleybird was talking about.  i only had a few put in to see if would like them and they were blended with my original length.  but they were annoying because you caught your comb on them when you were combing out your hair after washing it and everytime you ran your fingers through your hair- you could feel them.   also, i have fine/thin hair and they slid out after about 6 weeks and they are supposed to last twice that long.

so- those are my experiences!  i bet yours look great happydaisy!

Thanks ladies!!!! its been a couple days since Ive been on here  so I dont know if anyone will read this, but anyway...The top of my haid is braided in cornrows all the way to my occipital bone(bout the top of the ears),and then extra hair is sewn in to cover up the braids in the back. The bottom is just squared off into plaits with the hair interwoven in the braids. The top has about 2 inches of cornrows visible, kinda like how it looks when you get your hair twisted with the tiny butterfly clippies.
I color my hair constantly,so I just matched the extensions to my current color, which is a deep brown.(level 4)
It took about an hour-hour 1/2 for the plaits in the back, and about 4 hours to do the cornrows and the sewing.
I'm a hairdresser, and a fellow  stylist was teaching a class on wigs and extensions at the community college,so it honestly only cost me the price of the hair. But she normally charges $80-$90 dollars for the first 3 hours, and then $30 after that.
I've actually gotten lots of compliments since my last post,so I do feel better about the stares. But man, my hair is heavy!!!People I havnt seen in awhile actually thought it was my own hair,so that was cool. The braids have gotten a little loose from washing, but they feel real even though its synthetic.
Thanks for the positive post!!!!
