i just bought this vanity:

Picture of Vanity and Mirror with Storage Bench - Espresso

i LOVE it, but as you can see there are no lights. i've put it next to a window in our bedroom, but i need a LOT more light since i want to put my make-up on here.

Thoughts: should i buy a clip light and clip it to the top lip-thing? i don't want to take up too much counter space w/a lamp, you know.

Also looking for a tray/cup set. it's chocolate brown and our sheets/bed are pale greys and this is our headboard: but not as linen-y, it's more micro-suede w/a matching bench @ the foot of the bed.

Sorry, my question is how to iluminate the vanity but not cause too much shadow to interfere w/make-up application?

Cool vanity!  I love the leather trays from Hold Everything

divided jewelry tray

And there are matching jewelry boxes

limited edition paige jewelry boxes

I have lamp on my vanity like this....

Tolomeo Mini Table Lamp

And the head swivels so I can adjust the light.  I'm sure you can find something with a smaller base.

To organize my makeup and brushes, I use two asian dishes like these:

11" Black Swirl Rectangular Plate

one for my brushes, the other for makeup.

Maybe something in a shape like this, so the light would distribute evenly on your face?

LMonet, where are those lamps from??? I love them for our living room! And great idea about a longer shaded lamp!

jj- I am also looking for those trays. Great idea! Do you find that your brushes stay good laying down? i've always seen them stored standing up...not sure it matters. maybe a separate post...

I have about 10 trish mcevoy brushes that I keep on the tray, and they stay in good shape laying down.  I clean them about once a month and dust the tray.

Not sure where you live, but Go Mama Go in DC has a HUGE selection of trays and sushi dishes and World Market has them too.

LMonet:

They're all from Target  also, just saved me a ton of $$$. I was just @ a target and didn't see any of these...altho i wasn't looking for them specifically.

I love that vanity!  I used to have one and I loved it, but now I use my second bathroom as a vanity area.

I really like Ikea wall lamps for this purpose.  Here are a few from their Web site.

This one is an uplight, and it is hard to tell from the picture, but maybe you could mount it below the mirror?

Carmenb513: for some reason "quote didn't work" anyway,

Thanks! The brand is Quebeko. They have the BEST cutomer service!!!! i ordered it through www.furniturefind.com for $426 or seomthing like that. THEN i found it for less on other sites and furniture find (also great customer service) send me a check for the difference!!! If you do a search for Quebeko in google you'll find sites that have it. It may be even cheaper now. Sorry, i don't remember where I saw it for less.

WARNING. you have to assemble it yourself and will need a helper. my 1st package had a broken mirror....they sent a new one, but we were in the middle of putting it together....

Also, the drawer is crap. i put WD-40 on it and it's just not good.i know i get what i pay for, but it looks great and there's storage under the bench and a little shelf under there too.

I'm happy with it so far....good luck!!! Target has some nice-ish ones too.

I think in either last month's or this month's issues of Domino magazine they had a spread about vanities and how to decorate them according to your taste.  I'll see if I can pull anything up cuz they had some cute ideas.

Personally, I wouldn't clip anything onto the vanity directly.  I think a clip may damage the wood, plus it's such a pretty vanity that I think clipping something onto it may end up making it look cluttered.  I'd do a pretty lamp, like some that LMonet posted, and some pretty trays to keep your stuff organized.

ETA:  I just looked at the domino website and if you go to www.dominomag.com and click on "Peek Inside" then flip to the last page, they have a section about vanities.  See if you can find that issue at your local bookstore because they had a few different looks in the mag that they're not showing on the website.

Also, I just saw the cutest idea not too long ago--if you have a bunch of perfume or makeup and want to display it in a pretty way, you can arrange it on top of a crystal cake server, like this:

And I thought this was pretty for jewelry or makeup:

Just some ideas.  These pieces are all from Crate and Barrel, but you can probably find some cheaper versions at Target as well.
