Giving a Presentation
Permalink Closed

Ok, Im in pharmacy school and have to give a 5-10 min speech to about 15 of my fellow students on a very scientific journal article I read on Tuesday.  Ive been practicing it all day, but still feel super nervous and afraid Ill blank when Im up there.  I really want to work at being good and not nervous at giving presentations as its an important thing in life and careers.  Im looking for some pointers and tips to ease my nervousness and help me deliver a good presentation.

Sure. Here are the things I did (& coached my friends to do)

  • Get a friend and tell them to sit down and look at you while you're practicing giving your talk. If you have the whole thing written, you can just read it out to her/him.

  • If you didn't write all of your text down, it's really important to have at least the first 2-3 phrases both on paper and memorized. Once you've started, the whole thing ceases to terrify.

  • Give your practice talk 2-3 times, but with an audience (this is very important). If the talk is only 10 minutes, the rehearsal should not take you more than an hour.

  • As you practice, remember to make eye contact with your audience from time to time.

HTH. Another helpful thing for me was to memorize not just the opening sentences, but the key sentences - but then my talks are usually longer. Good luck!
