I realize they're on their way out, but I have two great ponchos and want to get some use out of them this fall. One is a striped cashmere one by Vince:
The other is heathered teal green with fringe and a turtleneck - sort of soft and fuzzy. Bought it from a street vendor in Santa Fe, so have no pics.
Anyway, what do you wear under them so you don't look underdressed or weird if you get warm and want to take them off?
Also, too costumey to wear cowboy boots with a poncho? I am guessing yes.

I wouldn't wear cowboy boots with a poncho. As far as what to wear under one, last year when I was a wearing a poncho every other day, I wore them with racerbacks, crinkle camis and long sleeve t's. Nothing special, but I didn't take the poncho off.
Maybe you could wear simple knit top that has some special details, that you might not see under the poncho, but would if you took it off. Like these:
