started a class...

This week I started my evening class "Spanish for Travellers" and I have to admit I'm a bit disappointed. I had hoped that taking this class I'd meet some cool people who were also interested in travelling and stuff, but my classmates are all much older than I am- mostly mid-fourties and fifities, frumpy couples. Nobody seems very fun and no one has really been very friendly to me. Everyone has mostly been sticking to their partner.

My teacher is ok but she has a tendency to wander off topic. I haven't been back in school for over 7 years so I am a little ADD when she starts rambling. If I had known before that it was going to be like this I probably wouldn't have signed up. But I have to stick it out for another 2 months and try to learn and get as much out of it as possible. I'm just a bit bummed that it turned out to be like this.

Any thoughts on how to get the most out of this class?

That sucks. Funny though because my parents are currently enrolled in Spanish for Travellers as well. I have no suggestions as to how to pay attention. Adderall's the only thing that works for me!

I took Italian for a few semesters and had a similar experience. I hoped I could make some new friends and maybe even meet a cute guy but most of my classmates were much older or were just kind of boring and unfriendly.

I felt like I got a lot out of it though. I just gave up on any social benefits of being in the class and focussed on learning the language. If I liked the teacher I would try to get to class early to chat. I also bought a few additional books (like the 500 Verbs series, some workbooks) and CDs so I could try to supplement the class and so I would have extra material to work with when the class ended.

Anyway, it sucks that you don't like the people because that would make it much more fun but I'm sure you will be glad you took it in the end. Also your bf speaks Spanish right? Maybe you can practice with him at home to make it more fun.
