I wear tights all winter long, both to work and out on weekends.

My office is pretty conservative so for work I usually stick to solid black tights and a more subdued patterns - herringbone, tiny polka dots, ribbed and I'll wear tightly woven fishnets if the rest of my outfit is really conservative (usually I layer black fishnets over black or gray tights).
I tend to match my tights to either my skirt or my shoes - with most of my colored skirts I stick to black tights (solid if the skirt is patterned or the shoes have a lot going on, textured if my skirt and shoes are plain) and with my gray pencil skirt I either wear gray or black tights.

Outside of work I have a lot of crazy patterned and colored tights. I like to wear brightly colored tights with short fitted skirts and knee high boots so only a few inches of the tights are visible. With patterned tights I think some sort of flared skirt (circle, A-line, etc) paired with flats looks adorable. You could also wear tights with cropped pants and heels.

One way you can tone down the fishnets is to wear black fishnets over a pair of solid tights.  Like black fishnets over gray tights like cc suggested.  I do this for work because fishnets alone would attract unwanted attention in my office.
