Dyeing fabric?
Permalink Closed

I was wondering if this was possible...

I have a duvet cover that was baby blue.  I only washed it a few times before the color faded so much.  Is there a fabric dye that I can get and dye this myself at home?

You could try Rit dye.

as long as it's a fabric that can withstand hot water (i.e. not silk or something that would shrink a lot) you should be fine.  for something as big as a duvet cover, i think i'd do it in the bathtub rather than a bucket.  dyeing is really messy, too, but if you use the bathtub it would probably be a little better (and wear some long rubber gloves!).

Actually, if you use RIT, I would go out and buy a Rubbermaid type tub to soak it in.  Could stain your bathtub if it's porous.  You can re-use the tub even if it is stained as long as it is washed out and dried well.  I think Rit is your best option, though.  It's worth a try if you aren't going to use it anymore anyway.

Thanks for the advice.  I have a big pink bucket that I use for hadwashing things.  Plus pink rubber gloves.  I just didn't want to toss out a nice duvet cover and shams just because they faded, they are too expensive to be buying a new set!

you can actually do it right in your washing machine. i just dyed two of my sweaters using this method today and it worked fantastic. you just have to run a hot water wash with a few cups of bleach afterwards and it came perfectly clean.
