So does anyone else ever do this?

My style is pretty simple usually with a little twist. Whenever - in my opinion - I try to be a little edgy or try a trend, I screw up. I think a lot of this has to do with not having *quite* all the right pieces for the look I want to pull off, or buying things I like and then not knowing what to wear them with. Sigh.

So the other night I went out to dinner with my friends and wanted to wear my cowboy boots. I put together an outfit in my head that looked cute (in my head) and then once I had it on I just didn't feel right. Worse, I had to wear it b/c my friends were waiting outside - getting dressed is the absolute last thing I do (I don't want to get toothpaste/makeup/hair product on my clothes so I put them on literally right before leaving). We were just going out to a local dinner, but I felt weird. I told them jokingly I hoped they weren't embarrassed to be seen with me and they didn't really say anything! That said, my friend and her husband are really conservative in how they dress.

So my outfit was this blue-green silk sleeveless tunic from Catherine Malandrino - the one from last year with the brass buckles on the straps. I wore a shorter choco brown cardigan over that and my seven rocker denim mini, and my rocketbusters (mid-calf brown cowboy boots with white and turquoise details). No jewelry, just a gold chain with a diamond pendant. I don't know - maybe it looked ok. But this always happens to me - I can wear something and cringe about it later!

So seriously, does this suck?

Without the sweater it's not terribly flattering b/c it's too big - the straps sit too far apart and there's too much material in the body. I think it makes me look thicker through the middle than I am.

Oh, there are the boots:

first of all... NO, it doesn't suck, you look great! fabulous, really. i especially like it with the cardi.

and yes, i sometimes leave the house (usually in a hurry) feeling like i missed the mark on something i was going for "in my head". i then feel like a doofus when i get home, identify the problem and spot something in my closet that would have worked better. honestly though, it's only me that thinks about those little details that i feel were missed (which is bothersome when you are semi-uncomfortable) but i'm sure no one else notices.

I do this, too.  With me I think it's that I buy stuff that I like and then hope to be able to put it together at home - I almost never buy with a particular look or outfit in mind.

However, I think your outfit looks just fine!  If anything, I think a slouchier tunic/top would be neat proportion-wise (maybe belted on the hip), but I don't see anything fundamentally 'wrong' with your look.

There's nothing wrong with being a bit adventurous, but your bound to end up with some 'eh' looks in between all the 'fabulous!' looks.

I think you looked cute!  I have yet to see an outfit (either one you posted in threadstyle or came up with to buy or for someone else) not be cute!

You should start posting your outfits again!

I think you totally rock that outfit! Please don't let your conservatively-dressed friend and husband make you feel bad. If I saw you on the street wearing that, I would be envious of your style!

Oh, and I do the same thing. I tend to dress simply. So, whenever I wear something a little different, I feel self-conscious, like everyone must be looking at me and wondering why I'm so "dressed up" or whatever. So, you're not alone.

First off you are a "do" not a "don't", but I do understand because my friends don't get me sometimes and I feel silly. Then there are other times when I am the one that dresses in my preppy stuff and then I feel stupid. So we just need to have more confidence in our outfits and rock whatever we want! I personally think you look really cute.

I have outfit remorse all the time because I tend to be pretty conservative and safe most of the time, and when I decide to go out of that area, I usually have to ask my husband about  a million times if I look great.

That being said, I think you look great!  I wish my legs looked like yours!

I feel this way sometimes also; one day, the outfit was PERFECT when I left the house, but throughout the day, my shirt was TOO low-cut, and the skirt was TOO BIG, and it was Jrs. sz. 7, but it may have been mislabeled. I'm pretty conservative myself, and when I 'do' sometimes step out of my boundaries, I feel a lil' uncomfy, esp. if/when I'm going to work. I'm a lil' more careFREE on the weekends, so..... and dc - LOVED YOUR OUTFIT, those boots are too cute!!!  Not bad for women OUR age.....(LOL)

I think you looked GREAT! I actually like the outfit better w/out the cardigan. I think the blouse does *not* make you look thick (or thicker) in the middle area. You actually have a nice hourglass shape.

I also think the proportion of the boots / skirt is perfect, and you already know I looooove those boots.

Sometimes I, too, feel that I have to "dress down" for the conservatives among my friends, so I know how you feel. But please, no remorse. You looked teriffic, IMO.

Thanks, girls - you made me feel MUCH better! I have actually been mentally cringing for 2 days about this. (I need to get a life!)

I am just always worried I'll try something and people will be like, "Aw, how sad - look at how she tried to be hip!"

i agree with hotcocoa. i think you look fab, but can totally relate to the feeling. last friday i wore my gauchos with cowboy boots and i felt off the whole day (it felt too trendy, even though when i look at the pics it looks fine.)  usually when i feel like this it's b/c i'm wearing a piece that i don't like but have forgotten why i don't like. when i come home i take it out of my closet so i'm not tempted to wear it again. anyway just use it as a catalyst, and try to think of new pairings when you have free time. but i personally think it's a great outfit.

I am glad to know that someone else feels this way though. I am still kicking myself for the dress that I wore in my friend's wedding. I looked like I copied the bridesmaid dresses....it has been bugging me for 2 months now. So thanks for sharing and making feel better about not being the only one who thinks too much about these things.

oh this is great this is how i felt last night when i was tying on some things and trying to make a outfit- i posted it in shopping and fashion and i guess it looked okay because i got postive feedback. So i felt better @ it. Even today i felt plain and boring, but comfortable and was thinking hum does this look okay- etc.... You look great and wear your boots well- see i would try that and take them off- because i would feel like i look dumb. Thank you for making us all feel better and iam glad we was able to do the same for you. This is one of my reasons i love this web site

first off, you outfit looks great so don't worry!

I do that all the time though. I have a very basic style that I am comfortable in and as much as I want to stray from that at times, I always feel so awkward. Even if the outfit is totally "me" I feel weird in it. I am having the same boots problem too- I bought the frye dorado's and love them to death but can not find an outfit that I don't feel like a freak in (even though I see it and know it looks cute...)

When you feel a little uncomfortable wearing something that will stand out (such as being with conservative friends) NEVER apologize for the way you look! It's great to be unique and different. Just express yourself and don't doubt it! Your friends will never "get it" so don't even try and explain. If they say something...smile and just get over it!

You looked totally appropriate, put-together and amazing!
