*UPDATE* Is it too much to ask for me to catch just one break???!!
Permalink Closed

My car died.  Died.  It didn't pass inspection and I am now carless. I can't get a loan b/c my debt (from school)/income (from crap ass job) is too high.  I am carless, will soon be jobless (b/c I can't commute an hour and a half without a car) and I'm living with my mother at 26. WTF!??  WHEN AM I GOING TO CATCH A BREAK?!! WTF?!! Seriously.

ETA: *update*

My mom and I went car shopping all day today and I got a car.  I was able to get a loan b/c my credit has improved (yay!!).  I got a used Nissan Altima (fully loaded).  Not exactly my first choice, but it works for now and I like it.  Maybe next time I'll get that Mazda that I've always wanted.

Thanks, ladies for all of your suggestions and thoughts!

nyla, i am so sorry to hear things have been going so bad for you lately. do you have anything saved up that you can take this as a sign to get out of dodge and move to a city you've been wanting to that has good public transportation?

I only have a litte bit saved, not nearly enough to move anywhere.  And none of the cities I want to move to have good public transportation anyway.

I hear ya... Cali is not exactly known for it's stellar pub. trans. system.  I'm so sorry girl, you poor thing!  Could you borrow your mom's car and either drive her to work or she could take pub. trans. if she works close by?  I'm sure you've already considered all your options, but I was just curious.  Also... usually school debt doesn't could negatively against you.  Not that you want to take on a car loan when you are trying to save money to move, but in my case I have over $20,000 in school debt and around $10,000 in cc debt (I'm a baaaaaad girl!) but I actually have excellent credit and was able to buy a brand new car at the lowest APR!  I was shocked!  So maybe your credit isn't as bad as you think!  Good luck, we are all pulling for you!

Oh boy. Take a deep breath.

Can your mom co-sign the car loan with you? Then, go beat the crap out of your almost-roommates and get your deposit back. Then use that as a down payment on a low-end compact-type car.

That job is going to make you snap. You've got retail experience...I know you don't want to go back to that, but maybe until you can get back on your feet a little bit? Somewhere closer to your mom's house. There HAVE to be stores nearby.

This is all just vague advice that I give without really knowing you...so feel free to tell me where to stick it. But you need to make a change before you completely lose it.

My mom works two jobs and needs her car in the middle of the day to get from one to the other, so unfortunately, carpooling isn't an option.

Yeah, I have about $30,000 in school debt, plus cc debt that I incurred with school expenses (a decent amount, I might add).  I had put my cc's in a consolidation program and they totally screwed me and messed up my credit, so my credit is just okay.  Not terrible, not great.

gruiz, I think retail would make me snap even more than the job I have right now.  What really pisses me off is, at the moment, the majority of the issues stem from my college debt. And the kicker is that I don't even use the degree.  That makes me even madder when I am sitting at my desk answering yet another phone call.  I'm not at work today btw b/c of the car situation.

I'm really sorry for your bad luck.  I'm sure you feel hopeless right now.

Is there anyone where you currently work that might live where you are living so that a carpool could be arranged?

Or could you seek out a carpool situation from the town you live in to where your current job is?

There has to be something like that.

oh no!!! can you get someone to co-sign a loan with you? or just buy something cheap that will last a little while (so not what you need to be doing now, but you need to get to work). I know you've already been looking for better and closer jobs, but are there any other options? Can you freelance or something? I dunno... ugh, I wish I had a great job lead or something for you.

I'm thinking about it.  I know I wouldn't need a car b/c I could just take the train to visit my mom if I had to.

Sunshinegirl, yes, hopeless is a good word to describe it.  What's more is that I still don't have health insurance and I'm in constant pain b/c of a pinched nerve in my back, too.  So that just adds to the misery.  As far as a carpool, most people who live where I live don't work where I work. The commute is ridiculous and I'm trying to find something closer, but jobs aren't so plentiful in this area.

ILoveChoo, I wish I could support myself with freelancing, but that's not reality at the moment. And all of these financial issues have (again) put jewelry design on the back burner, so I have hardly any income from that right now either. No product=no income.

I really am having trouble seeing the forrest through the trees (is that how the expression goes or did I totally mess that up?).  It's just one thing after another after another.  I just need to catch just one break. Just one. That's it. Just one.

Oh how terrible for you!  This questions may be silly...but have you actually tried to get a car loan or a lease?  Because a car is often a necessity for people, it is quite a bit easier to get approved for a car loan/lease than it used to be. As someone else said, you might be surprised...

Also don't know if you access to a credit union...they also usually are a bit easier to deal w/ in terms of getting credit...sometimes will approval a loan if they can automatically have it deducted from your account.

If you absolutely can't get approved is there anyone else who you could borrow some money from or would be willing to cosign for you...an older sibling, an aunt or uncle, a grandparent?

I tried to get a car loan a year and a half ago and was denied. My credit has improved a little since then, but not a whole lot since it was pretty messed up to begin with.  I did try one place today and was denied, but they told me that you have to have perfect credit to get a loan with them.

There really isn't anyone to borrow money from.  I don't have any grandparents left, I'm an only child, no aunts or uncles.  My mom can't really afford to take on more debt as she is still trying to pay off debt from my college expenses. It's just a really bleak situation right now.

Karina, I have to redo my resume. I will do that today (cable guy is coming to install cable internet, so I can do it after that).  If you could see if that's still available that would be great.  Any other positions that might be interesting would be fine, too. Thanks!!!

Sheesh, it sounds like you'd have better odds of catching a break playing the lottery!  I cannot even believe all the TV-movie crap that's happened to you!

i'm sorry that so much s**t has been happening to you. things will get better. when you looked at car loans did you do it online or did you go to a dealership. i've always thought that in areas where a car is a necessity dealerships are willing to work with peopl. i know several people with less than stellar credit (far from it) who've been able to get cars through dealers, even if it's not the greatest car.

eta: when i lived in tx, a lot of dealers had their own financing as opposed to going through a bank. and it was easier for people to get cars from them than from the major ones that dealt only with banks.

I know it might sound completely insane, but I feel like this is a step in the right direction, like maybe now other things will start to go better, too.  Crazy, I know.
