mattress shopping

My husband and I just bought a new mattress (queen size, finally, we've been sleeping on a double for 3 years!), a Simmons Beautyrest.  I am a little wary about it though b/c we bought it at Mattress Discounters...have heard some negative things about them.  Also, it is next to impossible to comparison shop mattresses since the manufacturers give different names to similar beds depending on the store they are supplying.  So I'm not totally sure about the quality of the mattress, though it was the most comfortable we tried.

My question is, how much have you all paid for queen size mattresses in the average quality range?  We paid about $1,000, which was the cheapest we saw that was of acceptable quality.  We looked at Hecht's and Bloomingdales and their prices were in the $1200 - $4000 range...plus the lady at Bloomies was a total b*ich but that's another story.

There's nothing I can do now if we did pay too much, but I would feel better if I knew others had paid as much for a comparable mattress...tia.

My parents recently bought a new mattress (queen) and it is silk pillow top (for summer) on one side and wool pillow top on the other (for winter) and they paid about 1000 from what I can remember.  When we went a looked at mattresses that seemed to be a consistent price for them so I'm sure you got a good deal.

We were discussing mattress prices at work the other day and most people paid about a 1000 for theirs as well.  One individual paid 2000 because he wanted a perfect mattress since technically you spend a lot of time in bed each day.

HTH!!

I think you guys did the smart thing, goign to a local (is Mattress Discounters local?) chain as opposed to a department store.

When I first came out to LA, my BF was sleeping in a full size bed. We discovered that it was too small the first night we slept together.

We bought a Simmons Beautyrest after spending a day going to four mattress stores and trying out tons and tons of mattresses. We were lucky at two of the stores...one was a Simmons company store so the SA was very helpful and had access to a database so he could tell us all the names of any one given mattress. He also didn't pressure us at all and understood that we were on somewhat of a budget. The other was a local chainlet (Leeds in Los Angeles) where we were able to bargain down the price down to $720 out the door. We looked at Robinson's May and Macys but we were scared of the mattresses there and they all seemed so expensive.

We were so happy with the first mattress that when I moved out here permanently a year later, we bought the exact same mattress for my apartment for the exact same price (we told them our story from the year before and they gave the price to us, even though the price of the same mattress had gone up.

ETA: Ours was a plush, so we didn't have to deal with the expense of a pillowtop and we both prefer the slightly firmer sleeping surface.

well, i'm glad we didn't pay an outrageous price, but looking back I bet I could have bargained with the salesman.  We did bargain free delivery and two pillows into the deal but I think I could have gotten him down to $900....oh well....what's done is done.

I have a serta pillow top it was about $1500 for the set.

But.......

It was a floor model and my boss let me have it for $150. the most that has ever happened to tha bed at JCPenney was somebody sitting on it.

So I think considering what teh cost of mine originally you got yours for a good price!

As long as it's comfy and has a warranty, I wouldn't worry about it.  When I was shopping for furniture I looked at some mattresses at Macy's.  And there was the most comfy bed I have ever been on!  It was $4000 for the queen set, I wish I could have it right now.
