My friend's son really wants an MP3 player for Christmas. He wants on I-Pod but she can't spend the $$$$. So what would be a good alternative for less?? TIA.

I think a lot of depends on her price range. How old is her son? (Just wondering how much music he may want on there) I have IRiver in a 256 and this is sooo small and I am not huge into music. I generally like Iriver or rio for mp3 players. When I was looking these are the 2 brands I was torn between. I also like Creative labs they have cool features like being a flash drive as well.  I did finally break down and get the Ipod nano and personally I like it way better. Just a thought if he really wants an Ipod I think the minis may have been discontinued, if that is the case she may be able to find a good sale price.

Thanks for the info Deuce!! He is 14 and I don't think he is heavily in to music. Not positive about this. Are the Minis really being discontinued?? I would really like to get one for me I will have to start looking. I will tell her about the ones you mentioned. Thanks again.

I know that at our store we are now only selling the mini's we have in stock. We don't have them on out website, neither does Apple. From what we been told the Nano will be replacing the minis.

Check out the Creative Zen (it also comes in a micro version).  Much more geeky than an ipod, just as cool.  Better battery life.  Better sound.  $50 to $200 less than ipod.

Update: I just purchased one of these for myself.  Half the cost of the iPod Nano, but about 3 times the number of features: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16855603808

Here's a post I made in response to the exact same question someone else had:

I have this, and I LOVE IT!!!  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16855603808 (Here is the manufacturer's page: http://www.cowonamerica.com/products/iaudio/u2/)

I also have a 4GB nano, a 20GB ipod, an 80GB Archos media player, a Rio, and an old iRiver.  The 20GB ipod (2G) is in my car.  The others sit around gathering dust.

This player hides in my fist.  It's flash based, so it doesn't skip.  It's not as delicate as the nano, so it doesn't break (please note all the info on nanos with breaking screens, scratched cases, etc).

It has a radio, a built in recorder (you can record voice, the radio, or any outside source with NO added attachments), displays lyrics, PLUGS DIRECTLY INTO a PC or Mac with no extra attachments, and get this....

You don't need software to put songs on it.  Just copy them over.  So if you want to move them back, you just click & drag them back.

It's about half the cost of the ipod or nano, and you don't need to buy _any_ accessories.  It even comes with it's own (very nice) case.  I'm using this little baby every day and it's become the only player I listen to (I even removed my car ipod one day because the sound is better than what comes out of the ipod).
