I'm in marketing as well. Did you get into marketing hoping that one day you could go into sales, or have you otherwise been interested in becoming a sales rep? Are you pretty sure that you would like the career transition? Just something to think about, as that might be as big of a change as the move, if not bigger.

In my company, you have to go into sales to get any senior or executive positions.  If I really want a career in this industry, I will eventually have to take a sales position.  Without sales, I could keep taking jobs that paid more than the last, but I would never achieve the status of the positions that a stint in sales would qualify me for.  This also means that after I gain experience, I could move back here and work in this office again at a higher marketing or even editorial position.

So the pros are more money, having my own place (which I can't do here because of the high cost of living), free company car and insurance, it will open up new opportunities for me, and getting to experience a different area of the country.

The con is being away from everyone I know and not even close enough to visit on a regular basis.  Also, if I totally hated it, I would have given up a job that I liked and won't be able to get back because I am the only person in the company that holds this position.  I would have to find something else to do in my company (maybe even take a demotion if I couldn't find anything quick enough) or even be left with nowhere to work at all.

i agree with everyone who said you should at least explore it. i think the fact that they are pursuing you is awesome and would probably give you some leverage in picking cities if you decide to take the opportunity. also one of my friends is from WI and she lives about an hour from chicago (i think that's on the train but not 100% sure) so it might not be that bad.

I am so excited for you! You should definitely go! And I have moved away from all my family and friends for various reasons twice, and I'm alone in the middle of the midwest right now, so I can relate. It's scary, but the friend syou have will always be your friends, and you can always go back. Plus, this is sort of the perfect answer to the everyone-is-married-and-trying-to-set-me-up thing that's going on with your friends now... I think this sounds awesome! Good luck! You so deserve this break! This has the-universe-is-looking-out-for-you written all over it!

As for the job end of things, these risks sound smaller than the payoff - it's really a compliment that your company wants to move you like this. If they like you this much, they'll probably work with you if you change your mind. Either way, if you move, you're not locked into anything because this is such a promotion in your company that it moves you up into a better bracket of jobs that you can apply for if you want to switch... And you can meet a whole new level of people to network with, too...

Sweetie, you do what's in your heart. But either way, this is a really big compliment and you shouldl be very excited!

Now, Chicago, IL is not much further - that would be a great place to live... Ohio... eh.  Minnesota... eh. Indiana... eh. Wisconsin has good cheese and a lot of conservative religious people that drink a lot of beer... I have no idea about Oklahoma - never been there. Really??? I live in PA and I swear it takes longer than that.  It takes somewhere between 5-6 hours to get from Philly to Pittsburgh (I went to college my first two years out toward Pburgh. I hate that drive!!).  ETA: Okay, I'm a nerd and checked the time on mapquest b/c I was really curious about that. According to that, it's actually almost a 14 hour drive.  I'm a dork. -- Edited by NylaBelle at 12:49, 2005-09-27

Hmmm...that's strange, the first time I looked it up it said 13 hours, 48 minutes, but then I checked again and now it's saying 9 hours, 58 minutes (from Philly).  Maybe I typed something in wrong the first time.  Weird.
