What are some good paints that aren't too expensive?  I'm only going to be in my place for 1-2 years MAX, so I don't want something too pricey but i don't want it to look terrible right off the bat either.  My room is 16'7" by 10'6" with higher ceilings- maybe 10 ft?  Does anyone know how expensive painting is?  I hope its not like $200, i think i may have many of the tools at my parents, just need the primer and paint.

ETA: i searched old posts and found a following for Behr and Benjamin Moore paints.  Which is pricier, and is it a whole lot more than medium grade paints?  What finish do you think i should use- eggshell for walls and semi-gloss for moldings?

Behr paints from Home Depot are great. My friend swears by the brand from Walmart (I don't know the actual brand name) but I've never tried it. If you paint yourself it can be cheap, hiring painters is expensive.

Here's a thread where we discuss painting: HTH!

ahh, i can't find prices online!  About how much does a gallong of BM paint cost and how many square feet does it cover?  Whats a good primer for the walls?  I'm thinking that if BM covers well, i can do one coat primer, one coat paint.

I believe its about $25-ish a gallon?

Are you using bare drywall that hasn't been painted before? Or are your walls a really crazy/dark/bright color or are you doing a crazy color? If your walls are just plain paint and in good shape you probably don't need a primer. But I always do 2 coats of paint, you'll be so much happier with the outcome.

Behr is a good brand.  We used it for a few rooms at my house.

Kilz from Walmart, about $10-$15 per gallon and the stuff rocks, very thick and good consistency, so even the dark colors I've painted with go on with one coat and without primer (even over dark navy blue!).  I highly recommend that stuff!

The walls are medium to dark green, so i could either do one coat of primer and one coat of paint, or two coats of paint.  Which is better?

i heard (i'm not sure if it's true or not) that walmart brand paint is made by benjamin moore, so it's suppossed to be great quality (and it is dirt cheap).

Kilz has a primer that works really well too....just make sure that you have really good ventilation

Is wal-mart brand paint different from Kilz?  Or is Kilz the only wal-mart brand paint?

They have Color Place (made by BM), I've used it and it's ok, not the best coverage.  Then they have Kilz and one other brand (I forget which one).  Color place is the cheapest, and the Kilz and the other brand are their premium paints.  I've gotten a lot of paint from there, can ya tell, hehe

So Kilz is the nicest?  I wonder if it is made by BM too...

I would do 1 coat primer 2 of paint. I like 2 coats no matter what because it gives an even coverage that looks nice. You should be able to get paint an primer for $25 a gallon each, for Behr, which I really love.  I don't think you will need more than 1 or 2 cans of each. I would use the same finish for the walls and moldings. I personally do not like or use semigloss for anything. Eggshell enamel should be good for cleaning purposes. Just my opinion but I think flat and eggshell look classier.

Have fun painting!

i am 95% sure kilz is made by a company called zinzer, not ben moore.  zinzer makes decent stuff.  their 1-2-3 primer is really good -- it sticks to anything. (maybe what rosie is talking about)

fyi -- if you are doing ceilings in white, benjamin moore ceiling white (it's their ceiling specific paint) is incredible and cheap -- maybe $15 a gallon and it covers really well.  a lot of the time it covers with one coat.

I do not like Behr at all!!!  It's fine if you're painting a light color, but it sucks if you're using a dark color.  I had to paint 5 coats of a plum color, and it still had white spots!!!!!  I had better luck with the RL paint from Home Depot and okay luck w/ Dutch Boy from Wal-Mart.

My parents like Pittsburgh paints, but I have no idea where to get it.  I like Sherwin-Williams if I'm painting a color like red.

Oh, and it's Wal-Mart's Dutch Boy line that's made by Sherwin-Williams or Benjamin Moore.

i second what missmee said! we used behr to paint our dining room red and in two coats it STILL wasn't covered well. (plus it looked totally shitty, and i had to have someone professionally repaint the room) the room was repainted with sherwin williams.

also on the pittsburgh paints website, there is a where to buy locator.
