downloading obscure music legally?
Permalink Closed

Okay, this is SO 1999, but that's the last time I ever got into downloading because I kind of gave up on it after it became illegal.  I used Napster of course, and every obscure and old song I could think of was available for downloading.  Now, I am told by friends that the only resource for some of those rare songs are illegal/foreign sites.  Does anyone know of a good legal one OR a foreign "illegal here" one that doesn't have a lot of adware or spyware?

Has anyone heard of or used Soulseek?  That's the only referral I have received so far....

Some of those rare/weird songs I am seeking are:

Skee Lo-I wish

Frente-Bizarre Love Triangle (It was a version of New Order's song, but on the movie soundtrack to "Threesome" I believe.)

Caroline's Spine-Rainbow Connection

Shamen-Ebeneezer Goode

Soulseek is great cause it's easy to download whole albums. I've found that it's got moderately obscure stuff, but not really obscure stuff. Although I'm pretty sure it isn't legal. Basically unless you're opposed to downloading stuff on moral grounds, you're a LOT less likely to get in trouble for downloading obscure stuff cause they just don't care as much. Also, for downloading just one song or so Limewire is decent, but also illegal.

I have that Frente' cd (I love the whole cd).  If you know of a way I could transfer the file to you, I will.

my brother was just telling me about a site called e donkey that has music to download and doesn't have much addware. I don't know how much obscure music they have but it is worth a shot. Let me know if it any good.

I've found pretty obscure stuff on Soulseek before. If you can't find anything using the basic search, try searching the chatrooms and using the "wish list" function since doing a basic search won't pick up on every user's files, especially those of people who aren't currently logged on. After you run a search you can click the "Add to Wishlist" button and it will save your search and alert you when it gets hits (you have to leave the program open and it will make some sort of beep plus the Soulseek icon will flash). To search chat rooms, enter the room for the relevant genre then on the menu go to Chatroom > Search Chatroom. I just looked for the Frente and Shamen songs and saw them on there. However, as Maddie pointed out, it is illegal. If you can't find the songs legally anywhere and don't mind waiting you could try to order used cds from half.com. I've found lots of older albums on there for under $4.

thanks all, cc, this information is really helpful.  I don't know why I didn't already think to search the albums on half.com or otherwise instead of relying on download sites, I know that old and less popular cds would be next to nothing anyway!  That reminds me that I have been meaning to put a bunch of my old cds up for sale too.

Can't help you but I love that version of Bizarre Love Triangle. We had a downloading marathon at a friends house when Napster was still on and everything was legal and that was one of the songs I got him to get. And Tracey....ooh, can't remember her last name but the song is called They Don't Know About Us. That was another one I would like to have.
