taming wispies

When I pull my hair back (ie in a ponytail or whatever) after a few hours I get a major attack of "the wispies"- little broken or baby hairs that stick out in every direction. It makes me feel really unpolished. Does anyone know of a product or treatment that can tame these wispies without weighing down or gunking up fine hair?

I have a mild case - more 'horns' than allover 'wipsies'.  I just put the facial moisturizer that's left on my hands after I apply it to my face on them.

omg, bc, i've been thinking about posting the same topic recently.  i get a severe case, like a little halo that goes all around my forhead & ears.  i always thought they were just broken hairs that would eventually grow out, but i've had the problem for years & they always stay the same!  i've tried lots of products, but nothing works.  my best defense is putting my hair in a pony/bun when it's still wet.  but then i get nasty bumps & stuff in the lower part of my hair!  i hope someone on here has the solution!!

not a solution, but i have face framing layers so i always pull them around my face so i can slick them down (i just use a ceramic straigtener on them and they stay together).  i can never pull all of my hair back, i would have the wispies too, so i just stick to looser styles.  Perhaps running a straightener on your hair will help stick it down?  Also, my hair is significantly better on the second day of washing, less flyaways.

One stylist in a mag recommended spraying hairspray on a toothbrush (one just for your hair of course!) and then smooth down the flyaways with the toothbrush.  It works for me, because I get them just around my temples.  HTH!

the only thing i've found to work is clear mascara.  i guess it's sort of like the hairspray on the toothbrush idea, you just swipe the little wand on the areas that are sticking up and it sort of helps keep them down.  i usually forget to use it, but the times i have, it works pretty well.  the mascara is sort of more of a gel consistency than normal mascara, it's just convenient because of the wand, so you don't have to get gel all over your hair.

I've heard good things about this and have been meaning to try it, but haven't gotten around to buying it yet.

Yea, same problem here. So I went to Aveda to see what they recommended, and the SA had me try this-

http://www.aveda.com/templates/products/sp.tmpl?CATEGORY_ID=CATEGORY6159&PRODUCT_ID=PROD5923

It's a little pump bottle that pumps out about a dime sized amount of this, its a mixture between a gel and a liquid. Seriously though, one pump is all you need. I have really long hair and I never use more than a pump of two...it's just the perfect amount. It doesn't wiegh hair down, either. This is one product that I would recommend.

i use a light hold water based pomade to slick my hair back and finish with a firm holding hair spray. it stops the "wispies" and keeps my hair locked in place all day!

john frieda makes this stuff called "dream creme" but really, i think you can use any styling product that isn't greasy and has hold. i like the dream creme because it's cheap and not super heavy. take the tiniest tiniest bit of product (like the amount you get on your hand if you just dotted it in the jar) and rub it in between your fingers. lightly glide your hand over your head and voila!
