Odd question, i know... dresses at work
Permalink Closed

ok ladies, please tell me i'm not the only one that feels this way, and if so, how to fix it....

i want to start incorporating dresses into my work ensembles (i work in a pretty casual law firm) but i feel so dressed up whenever i try to do so.  i think its because i'm pretty tall (5'7") and fairly slim and i enjoy wearing high heels.

i remember once i wore a plain black wool dress that is crewneck and fitted to the knees with NO jewlery but i still got comments like, "that looks like it belongs at a coctail party".  now thats definatley not the look i'm aiming for so please advise...

can anyone post some suggestions for dresses that are work friendly and not too dressy?  i'd really appreciate it.

I think that staying away from black will probably help you feel less dressed up. I love printed wrap dresses for work.

Something liek this can be worn with heels and jewelry and still look professional...

Sorry to be a hijacker but- ILoveChoo which of those wrap dresses did you finally decide on? How do you like it?

i have the same problem--i work at a very casual law firm (most people wear jeans or khakis every day, and some people wear sweatpants or yoga pants--no joke).  i have all these cute shift style dresses from my old workplaces, but i feel dumb wearing them here.  i would try to dress them down a bit with a cardigan over and tights and boots (as opposed to heels and hose) and no jewelry.  or sometimes i wear one of them with a turtleneck underneath it--that somehow makes it less dressy.

I have a couple dresses that I wear to work.

  • Stretchy cotton dress from Velvet with a swingy skirt and drop waist.

  • BR black/taupe pin dot flutter sleeve...the dress itself is form fitting.

I've found that wearing them with shrugs and sweaters usually nixes all potential "cocktail party attire" comments.

Also, wrap dresses like the one ILoveChoo posted are also really awesome and versatile.

I didn't end up getting one because they were both backordered in my size and I couldn't afford to pay for something that I couldn't even wear. I had actually half forgotten about it until today, even though it is still on my wish list. If they aren't backordered anymore, I'll have to get one- if I do I promise to give a full review!

edit: yep, still backordered for 9 weeks in my size.

Kind of on a tangent, but I hate when people comment on what I'm wearing, unless it's a casual "You look cute today" kind of comment.  Last week I wore a sweater, black pencil skirt, heels, and pearls to work and everyone kept asking if I had an important meeting and why I was so dressed up.  It just made me feel out of place and weird all day, and I didn't like it.  And the weird thing was that I wasn't really dressy.  Grrr.

Tangent over.

I used to have this problem too at my old work. One day I wore a red twinset and black pants and one of the girls that I worked with told me I looked like I was going clubbing. Who the heck wears a twinset clubbing?

I guess there really isn't anything you can do, people will always think what they want.

Most people are just idiots.  I work with people that because of the nature of our business think it is okay to give people elevator eyes and say "Ooh girl you look good today".  Ew!  That is never okay.  A simple you look nice today will suffice.

On another note: I totally heart that red wrap dress.  I think that I am going to go for the 9 week wait for it in my size.  What the hay, right?!

this is funny b/c my next article is going to be about dresses, though i haven't really started writing it yet, so i have no suggestions as of right now. but i say who cares. my mom always complains about this b/c people are always asking her why she's so dressed up (she doesn't over dress, she just always looks very nice and put together) she just responds by saying that she likes to look nice everywhere she goes.
