hurley's numbers are stamped on the hatch--that was why he freaked out and tried to get out of helping pull to open it.  he knows there can't be anything good inside.

ok, and is this the most recapped show in television history? how many clip shows and recaps do we need? i feel like there were at least three during last season, and now they are starting out with another one before the premiere.  jeez louise!

I agree that the survivors will divide between faith (Locke) and science (Jack).  I don't want to label either as good or evil at this point though. I suspect that Locke will try to convince his followers that they are on the island for a reason and therefore they don't need to try and get off the island.  I think that will be one of the main components of the "Locke Problem."  The other being that Locke has seen the "monster" for lack of a better term and seems to get along with it.

I definitely think that Locke is evil, or at least teetering on the edge. It's almost as if he's becoming part of the island, which isn't the most welcoming of places.

I think that there is more than one set of "others".  They found a several hundred year old slaver ship.  I think people have been getting shipwrecked/stranded on the island for a very long time.

I agree.  The Black Rock ended up there, although how it ended up in the middle of the island is another story.

My question is whether the hatch was left there by one of the groups of others or whether whoever/whatever created the island put it there.  I can't remember if Hurley's #s are on the hatch.

Yep, they're on the hatch.  And the numbers were also what drew Rousseau and her team to the island in the first place. They were repeating on a radio transmission.

Part of me also suspects that Walt is somehow causing the whole thing and that's why the others wanted him so badly.  I noticed that a lot of stuff he thinks about seems to just happen. Maybe they think he can get them off the island?

Another inspiration from Stephen King---The Shining.  Walt seems to have something like 'the shine,' where he can think something or read something and it manifests itself (Ex: he was reading Hurley's comic book with a polar bear in it and then suddenly, a polar bear showed up on the island.)

I'll come back and edit later...work to do.

Nyla, have you read/seen The Stand? My dad, also a LOST freak, says it's cool to compare the two.  I am a big wuss and afraid to read most Stephen King books, so that's why I ask.

I'm obsessed with The Stand. I've read the book multiple times and I have seen the movie (or mini-series, whatever you want to call it).  I really wanted to reread it over the summer to refresh my memory, but I didn't have time. Maybe I'll break it out now. We could have a mini-book club-- Lost and it's parallels to The Stand!

PS- As far as Stephen King books go, I think this is one of the least sci-fi creepy. It's still creepy b/c it's begins with a plague wiping out most of the population, but it's not The Shining creepy or anything like that.

PPS- Have you seen Storm of the Century? It was the made-for-tv script by Stephen King. You can also buy the script and read that, too.  There are parallels to Lost in there as well.
