But what in the heck is "OTHER"? What else would you call it?
COLA! I love to go somewhere and order a cola. My roomate and I in college thought it was funny and a funny word to say anyway, so it kind of stuck.
Growing up, I called it Coke and if I'm with "normal" people (not my old roomie or my fam), I order "Diet Coke" no matter what they have. Because it's Diet Coke I really want anyway. The words I most dread are "Is Pepsi ok?" But I always drink it anyway.
In the past couple of years I've started calling it soda. Funny, the map was right in both cases--where I grew up and where I live now!

How funny but that is right on. Growing up, i called all soft drinks "coke" but then you would specify what kind. I'm from the tampa bay area (florida) and it specifies that that region calls it coke.
I'm from Florida too, and every soda/pop/coke is called a Coke.

Question though: Say you "Coke" girls are ordering a Sprite, 7-Up, Mountain Dew, or whatever...do you still call it a coke even though it's not a "cola beverage"?
I'm confused...or maybe it's the gin and tonic and glass of wine that's getting to me...

Well I would order a Coke, Sprite, or Mt. Dew. No matter what they serve. But if I ask my family what we need at the grocery store, they will say cokes. And they will mean any carbonated beverage. Like I don't go to a restaurant and say, "I'd like a coke, make it a Sprite." But if I'm thirsty, "Let's stop and get a coke." Ha, it's a big C little c differentiation.

I was raised in Tulsa OK and I don't understand why people calls sodas "cokes," I had never heard that until I moved to Texas. Sometimes I would hear it referred to as "soda pop."
But most people in Tulsa call it "pop," I am not certain why I began calling it "soda." Probably through some dialect by association(I think that's what it's called when you pick up an accent from somewhere you visit or someone you meet-anyone know?) and I thought it sounded most proper, so it stuck with me.
And as far as restaurant ordering, when I waitressed for 2 yrs in Texas, people asked for coke, diet coke, sprite, or dr pepper most commonly. I actually never heard anyone say, "what kind of cokes do you have?" as I have been told that some people put it, but that would have been funny!!!

Cricket's map cracked me up... but I wasn't too surprised to see that it's what people say in my area. I have only one friend who calls it "pop" here in DC, but her parents are from western PA... don't they say that there?

my husband and like to be silly and say "soda" with our own imitation of an (not very authentic) east coast accent whenever we refer to pop. which is odd because we don't drink pop. i sure did drink my fair share as a kid though. mmmm, faygo rock 'n rye was my favorite although it makes my teeth scream just thinking about it now.
It is "SODA!" I come from the small part of the midwest that actually calls it that (Milwaukee, Wis.) I always found it odd that in Milwaukee, it is soda, but it is pop in all the surrounding areas.
Umm, I'm a seventh generation Atlanta native, the birthplace of Coke. I was raised that anything other than Coke, espcially Pepsi, is weird. When anyone in my family is sick, my father, an educated and accomplished physician, tells them to first have a Coke. I swear... it has healing powers. It's original purpose was actually for medicinal uses. Okay, enough of that. If you are ever in Atlanta or Vegas and want to learn more, go to 'The World of Coke'... it's a fun museum with TONS of free samples of ALL Coca-Cola products from all over the world.
i alternate b/t soda and coke. most of the time i say soda, but if i'm with my family or anyone from where i'm from we say coke -- it's the universal term for any carbonated beverage.

southwestern pa (where i grew up, and live currently) is definitely a pop area. i don't know so much about the northwestern part. i guess in erie they probably still say pop.
Growing up in Cinti, I said Pop, then I moved to Atlanta when I was 14 and man did I get made fun of when I said Pop! I actually call it a drink now, not Pop, Soda, or Coke. Well I only drink Diet Coke, so that is all there is to me. But when I ask my fiance if he wants something I say drink, or refreshing bevarage to be a dork! So I guess I am the other!

Oooohhhh! I say "beverage" too. "I am in need of a beverage" That can be anything, iced tea, water, or ,yes, to answer the poll, POP.

Yeah, they do. My first two years of college were spent in western PA and I was surrounded by people who called soda, pop.
I'm a northeasterner, so I say soda. For those of you that say "coke", what do you do if you really do want a Coke? How do you specify that you want the BRAND Coke? Do you say, "I'd like a Coke, coke."?
I just imagine a scene where you ask for a coke and the waitress asks "what kind?" Then you say "coke" and the waitress says "yes, coke, but what kind of coke?"
After typing "coke" so much, it looks weird to me.
