And an additional note...I HATE MY BANK....5/3 Bank charges $60 for every overdraft and $6 each day, so the very first day I overdraft they charge $66 and even if I put in enough to cover it, they charge the next day $6 because they process all the withdrawals first and then the deposits.  Any one know of a decent bank in Ohio???

i use Bank One (Merging with Chase) and i am happy with them.  If you have a checking and savings account with them, you can "link" them together so that if you ever go over, they automatically pull the funds from your savings and just charge you $7 for OD on your checking.

also, if you have direct deposit- they have free bill pay and no monthly fees.

Thanks guys, you made me feel so much better. I'm glad I'm not the only one this happens to. Around here everyone pretends it has never happened to them and I feel like such a loser. I really need to start writing things down right away, because I forget. But I'm still sad I spent my shopping $ for this weekend on ovedraft fees. Lesson learned.

*warning long rant/story ahead* definitely start writing things down. since i've started doing it, i haven't had any overdrafts, with the exception of last week, but i've also been really lax about writing things down this month, and have picked up the slack. not to lecture you (since i'm sure you're very responsible with your money) but they can close your acct. or take away privileges  if you overdraw too much (read the fine print about the terms of your account).

honestly banks aren't really in the business of helping you prevent overdrafts, since that's where they earn their fees (sorry to the bankers out there, but i've yet to have a really positive experience with a bank). and a lot of times they resort to what i think is questionable accounting.

perhaps your bank is better than mine, but i only learned after i broke down in tears with a customer service agent b/c i was like wtf are you doing to my money. even the online banking systems aren't reliable (again ask a cs agent or read the terms). my former bank (i've moved my money) does this funny thing where the only accurate information was the info. the teller had. on more than one occassion i made the mistake of thinking a check hadn't cleared yet (usually the evening b/f my direct deposit went in) so i assumed that i was okay. only to find out the next day that it went in, they just hadn't posted it, and i'd overdrawn my account. the really frustrating thing was that it was usually due to me purchasing something stupid and insignificant that i could totally have waited for (like a frappacino) and getting slammed with fees. also sometimes there would be no discrepancy b/t my current balance and available balance so i'd think that everything had cleared (this was b/f i started writing everything down) and i was okay, only to find out i was not.

anyway sorry for the rant, but please write things down, it will save you soo much money.

maybe this isn't a popular opinion, but i swear by my credit card.  That way, i can write everything down if i want to (using like a debit if i need to, only spending what i have), but still only write one check/deduction/withdrawal so i don't have to keep the state of my checking constantly in limbo.  Then when my statement comes, i can make sure to transfer money from my ING to my checking if i have to.  i will never use a debit card- these kinds of things scare me!  my friend has had money "saved" from them when using it at a bar (i think a similar thing happened to AJ) and it totally screwed her!  plus, when companies make a mistake or double charge, you may find out too late when theres a lot less money in your account.

Man this has me written all over it...I do this like once a month... I've gotten better lately, maybe down to once every two months...but still... When my estranged husband still lived with us I used to say we were paying the bank better than we ourselves get paid...

I still have my account w/ Kemba credit Union although I'm in Connecticut.I opened mine when I was about 14.........I love em'!In fact I still have part of my check direct deposited even though I'm not In Cincinnati anymore.

Check it out:

And they pay your overdraft mine I think is up to $500, which is great just in case your off and a car payment or something is going through........the is a fee of $25 I think but I'd rather that then a late payment and then the company charging you fees up th ying yang.
