minor ethical dilemma

I wouldn't keep it, but I am admittedly extremely neurotic about this subject and inviting bad karma. I think the idea of posting something vague on the website is a good one--this is the bldg. where you live, right? Not your office?

The building where I live. But I'd feel the same at my job.

I really don't want to keep it, and was not psyched about finding it. I thought - ugh! Why do I always have to deal with this stuff?

I could use the money, but some poor guy or girl lost that and I want to get it into the right hands... I think. It's a yuppie building, but $100 is $100.

i think posting is a good idea, I just hope noone lies and guesses the amount right! or talk to the person in your office building and ask if anyones reported any missing money and if so that they should contact you.

for all you know they have no clue to where they lost that bill and gave up looking......

I'm also a bad karma believer, so I would post something vague about it. It's funny you posted about this, because I swear I was being tested the other day. First, I went to Target, and they forgot to ring up a $30 necklace, which I found when I got into the parking lot. Then, at the salon, they first the forgot to charge me for one of the two services I received, and then, I went back later the same day just to get a blow dry (I was recovering from surgery and decided I deserved a treat!), and they weren't going to charge me for that either. When I went to pay, they said I had already paid earlier in the day for everything, which was untrue. All in all, I could have saved over $100, but, there was no way!

After the last time at the salon, I was like, ok universe, you can stop testing me now, I'm not falling for it!

I think chances are that you're going to get an honest answer out of anyone. I think you should donate it. The Red Cross of the Humane Society would gladly take $100 right now. You'd be giving to a good cause and wouldn't have to worry about the wrong person getting the money.

I think this is a good idea. That way it is going to a good cause and you don't have to worry that it will be placed in the wrong hands.

$5 is a relatively small amount. I wouldn't feel bad . Just lucky.

dc, did you post "something of value" after all? I think that is better than saying it was money, that way anyone just trying to guess would have a little harder time making up a story.

I remember when I was a kid and if we found anything, our mother had us turn it in even if it was just a dollar! It was to teach us honesty. So once when I was 10, I found this wallet with I think it was $4.31. Of course I thought it was a a lot of cash and I was going to throw a party with that dough! So my mom took me to the police station to report it found! After 90 days nobody claimed it (geez, who would have thought?!) and I got to have it.

Hi Jess, yeah, I did. I said where I found it and that the person should email and say what it was and when they lost it (it had to be today...) Also, as i said, only someone who lives here could claim it, so they'd have to be a real asshole to lie, you know? Most people here are owners, and it's a very social building...

And claudia - yeah, keep the $5! I'd have pocketed $20 or less without thinking twice. But $100.. someone's probably pissed off they lost it.

i would probably try to find the owner. but in general i don't really feel bad about finding money. though one time i found a dollar on the street and then this random man -- i think he was homeless or some sort of bum (sorry if that's not pc i can't think of a better description) was all like that was my dollar. it totally wasn't b/c he was walking in the opposite direction. and i didn't put the money in my pocket right away, so i suspect he saw me pick it up. anyway i felt guilty and gave it to him b/c he probably needed it more than i did. though i do suspect i funded his next alcohol purchase.

I find money all the time and I just keep it. There's no real way to confirm who lost it. I think if you don't want to keep it, the donating it is a great idea.

I think you did the right thing, dc. I remember when I was a server, I went out one night after work and lost my entire night of tips (about $250!!). It was in my pocket b/c I didn't have a purse with me. It must have fallen out. I would have been so happy if someone had been honest like you are, but alas, no one was. Someone found and kept my hard-earned cash. *sigh*

I think you're doing the right thing by posting. And, like NCShopper said, if no one claims it, donate it to something. That way it's off your hands, as far as karma is concerned.

all the karma posts have me thinking....couldn't it be good karma coming back to dc that let her find the money in the first place?

i think you did the right thing by posting, too, since you know the money must belong to someone in your building. i also think that donating it is a great idea, but i don't think you'll rack up any negative karma if you keep it if it isn't claimed...you tried!
