Margarine vs butter

Are we supposed to be using real butter now? I keep hearing conflicting info about what is worse for you. Anyone know for sure?

I never had real butter growing up, but I am sort of into it now.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE butter.  I could butter everything, cook everything in butter, I just love salted butter.  Can't stand margarine.  Butter in moderation is not unhealthy.

Trans-fat free spreads are probably the best for most things, like Smart Balance.  Butter is always better for cooking!

This is a good article about the differences any why one might be better than others:

I love butter.  I will never use margarine. I used to, but the amount of butter I use is so little, that it doesn't really make a huge difference.

margarine is actually white, but dyed yellow.

If I remember right from what my history prof explained, long ago the dairy farmers lobbied against the margarine makers because they did not want it to be sold to compete with butter, as long as it was not allowed to be dyed yellow, this worked, but eventually yellow dye was allowed.  anyway, can I just say, "gross."

ok, I found a valid link, here's the history on it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Margarine

i'm a butter girl, 100%.  It just seems more wholesome- like growing up on the farm, rosy-cheeked and well-fed.  That said, i don't eat very much of it.

Thanks, you guys -- it seems like using butter will be OK.

I don't really eat much of it unless I make real bread, or if I am cooking.
