hmm I'm not really sure how itunes works but with the limeware burn them onto a cd as a data file (you can hold more that way on a cd) and then put that in the laptop and save them on the hard drive. It should work just fine.

Are you Mac or PC?  I am assuming the desktop is no more than 6 years old (at least a Pentium or Centrino).

Mac, you can use this: http://www.cablestogo.com/product.asp?cat%5Fid=609&sku=16991

PC, you can use this:  http://www.cablestogo.com/product.asp?cat%5Fid=1504&sku=22431&engine=adwords!654&keyword=%28usb+transfer+cable+exact%29

Both of these can be found at Radio Shack, what you're looking for is either a Firewire transfer cable (mac) or a USB transfer cable.  Connect the two pcs, install the included software, and transfer the files.

If the new laptop is windows XP, the software should be built in (you don't need extra software).
