alright...so i'm looking for a new job...just something for the next year or less until i go back to school.  i have only had one job since college, it was working for a university whose policy is "no references for former employees."  i think they're trying to avoid lawsuits, but anyway, that's the policy.  SO...i think i'm kind of screwed.


1.  how do you come up with people to serve as references in this situation?  is it ever okay to include like, a "personal" or character reference, such as a friend?  (you can tell i'm grasping for straws here)


2.  is it just ridiculous to include references (and then probably the corresponding jobs) from college when you've been out and working for over 3 years?


OR...could i just include a reference from my old job anyway and let them explain the policy?  i guess that wouldn't work if i notify them beforehand like you're supposed to though...hmmm...

If this is for a resume, I suggest putting "references available upon request" at the bottom and taking the chance they won't ask for them.  If it is for an application, is there anyone at the school where you worked that was a co-worker/equal and is now a friend that could be a reference?  If so, I would try to go that route.

Every place I worked at previously has had this policy. The key is to find someone who will give you a reference and it most likely won't be a boss.  I have had to use assistants and or 'equals' (as jah said), but it's always worked for me.  HTH!

I second Nylabelle's suggestion to use a colleague from that place you worked - I worked at this terribly freakish place once and got laid off (they had a 35% turnover rate in the 9 months I was there - at an accounting firm for gosh sakes!) and absolutely did NOT want to put my supervisor down as a reference .  I used one of the accountants I had befriended (who had also been laid off, actually) as my reference.  Works like a charm !
