Can I vent about my brother for a moment? So if you've read some of my other posts, you are probably getting the picture that my brother annoys me a bit. I swear he has a horseshoe stuck up his ass, everything just comes to him. Yesterday, however just takes the cake.

...a little background info- my mom is very sweet and has and will do anything to help us. So when I was young I had some debts (student loan and fun with credit cards when you're young a dumb) that she paid off for me with the promise that I'd pay her back. Finally in about April of this year I managed to clear up that debt with her- all in all about $4000. My brother also had a loan from her but his was MUCH larger due to much more credit card fun and some unpaid taxes. I believe it was about $10 000.

So my mom just got a new line of credit to do some remodeling of her house. So yesterday at dinner with her and my brother, she announces that since she has this new L.o.C, he no longer has to pay off his debt to her. I swear, my mouth just about hit the table. I made a true effort to pay my mom back the money (and did it) and now he gets his debt just wiped clean? I am bummed- don't get me wrong, I don't want to mooch off my parents- but I can't believe it.

I am a bit pissed at my mom too. But I think she never expected my brother to pay her back anyway. I just think it sucks and I needed to vent a bit.

That sucks and it's not fair. I'd be totally pissed.

Btw, I have a younger brother who is nothing like me and we don't get along -- so maybe I can identify with you too well!

Ugh, that would annoy the hell out of me! My parents always pull shit like that (on a smaller scale) with my sister and me. I swear, she never has had to do anything. If I were you I would defintely bring this up with my mom. Not really expecting anything, but I think it would be worth it to let her know how it makes you feel (not to sound like a self help book).

I have a younger brother, too, and have experienced this kind of thing on a smaller scale.  I think that parents sometimes have more money later in life.  When you, as the oldest,  leave the nest (or at least start contributing money to the household), it leaves more money for the younger siblings.  I think it would have been more fair if she let him get away with half of his debt and gave you an equal amount in cash.  However, since you said she might have never expected him to pay her back in the first place, this may just be a way of easing her mind and not having to worry about it anymore.
