disputing a credit card charge?
Permalink Closed

ladies, i am at the end of my rope with this...and not sure what to do.

instead of giving trinket favors at our wedding, we decided to make a donation.  my grandmother had diabetes and eventually died of a whole host of kidney problems, so we chose to support the National Kidney Foundation.  this was over a month and a half ago that we did this...i made the donation online (which in retrospect, was probably not the smartest idea).  i clicked the submit button *only once* because i'm paranoid about this sort of thing.  and i got a confirmation message, and then an email, and everything looked normal.  then we got swept up in the end of our wedding plans, and our honeymoon, etc.  two weeks later, i'm looking at my credit card statement online...

they charged my card twice!  there were two identical charges, for the same amount (the amount i entered to donate), dated for the same day, just diff. transactions numbers.  i decided to give it a few days, since sometimes those online statements get funky and then clear themselves up.  well...about a week later, a *third* charge showed up on my statement.  again, same amount, but dated a week or so after the original two charges.

since then i have called the kidney foundation every four days or so.  i've talked to people at my local office, including the CEO.  i've talked to people at the national office.  i've faxed them copies of my credit card statement.  i've tried to be nice.  after a couple weeks of not getting anywhere, the "CEO" of my local office called and left me a voicemail saying that they were going to credit my card for the two extra duplicate charges and he apologized profusely for the mix-up, etc.  of course it didn't show up on my online statement right away, and as this was the friday before labor day, i just waited and checked again on tuesday, still nothing.  i checked again this morning, over a week later...STILL NOTHING!!!

i don't want to be a stingy old tightwad.  i feel sort of guilty for trying to get a refund from a charity.  but it freaks me out, because it seems as if my credit card could just keep getting charged repeatedly, and their organization is so badly organized, it would never get sorted out.  and it just isn't appropriate for them to take advantage that way.  there isn't even any one person i had been talking to that i could call back.  so i'm thinking of trying to dispute the charges with my credit card company, but i've never done that and i have no idea how it works.

anyone have any other ideas or advice on disputing charges?

I would go to your credit card company and quit going back and forth with the charity.  Tell them what happened and have them put a stop payment on the charges and they will get it sorted out for you and you won't have to pay any of the charges right now.  It might just be a simple mix up on the charity's part but they obviously don't want to deal with it right now.

Good advice--that's exactly what I would do.  That sucks that this happened to you--it would suck to ask a charity to give money back to you, but it's not your fault at all.

I'm not sure if the credit card company goes after the foundation to get your money back or if you have to do it.  I'd certainly ask though to make sure that at least someone is trying to get your money back in your wallet.  If you're the one that has to do the work to get the money back, I'd get the local CEO's name and call him EVERY SINGLE DAY until you are credited and let him know that you plan to do so.  If you weren't a priority before, you will be after a few consecutive days of phone calls.

I have disputed credit card charges on two occasions.  Once was from this sneaky company I bought a book from.  They charged me for this monthly membership fee for an online store without my knowledge!  Second was from Overstock for stuff I didn't get.  I contacted my credit card company, told them what was going on, they investigated, and I got my money back.  You should get a temporary chargeback on your credit card, which then will become permanent after they have investigated.

i've had issues with duplicate charges before too.  i didn't even bother with the company that made the charges, i went straight to my bank and they cleared them up immediately.

deal directly with your bank/credit card and they should be able to clear them for you.

hth!

yes, I agree, go through your C/C company.

I have an MBNA card, and you can do it online.  I have done it twice this past year, and after their investigation (which took about 6 weeks), I got my money back.

Just make sure you have copies of your correspondence with the charity handy, as well as names of people you have talked with.  The first dispute, MBNA asked for this info (I had an issue with a gym who kept charging me even though I had followed the contract exactly).
