for warmth and thinking it should be casual enough to wear with leggings (or skinny jeans), long sweaters and rain boots.  Any suggestions?  If you own one, what do you have and do you like it?

Thanks!

I don't own one so I can't vouch for their warmth.  I like wool coats with thinsilate or some other warm lining personally.  But I think that's just more about personal preference than function.

I'll bet you can get a really good one on sale now too.

Thanks, girls. I've been going back and forth as my husband thinks they are a bit frumpy, though lots of (nonfrumpy looking) people have them here. The Kenneth Cole one Boots posted is the most like what I have in mind. Thanks again. Oh and please stop me if I need to be stopped. I don't want to look Mom-ish!

I like the K. Cole one best that Boots posted.
I have a black one by Laundry that I have been wearing for years. I love it and I always gets compliments on it. Not at all mommish looking!

Ivory Down Coat

My parents got me this coat (Land's End Chalet Long Down Coat) for Christmas in the ivory color. At first, when I pulled it out of the box, I was "well, an ivory down coat that comes to my knees, I'm certainly not going to look like a fool".

I've worn it every day since Christmas though, and I love it. I was really put-off by the ivory color at first but I've really grown to like the color, I feel very adult and sophisticated in it. There's a bunch of colors too, though.

The coat is incredibly warm, so much so that unless it's 30 degrees or below, I'm sweating in it. But yes, I love it quite a bit. I've been wearing a J.Crew wool coat with that fancy silk lining it in but I've realized now how freaking cold I am on most mornings walking to work. I also really like it because it's water resistant so that even if it's snowing pretty heavily, I'm still nice and dry unlike my other coats.

I thought about Kors and looked at their stoire but nothing.  Only shiny ones and I think I don't want that.  Will check more though b/c I would imagine they would have good ones.

Thanks, rel rel.  good to know.  lands end makes good warm coats - i get them for my kids.  this one is a bit longer than i had been thinking of but it's good to know that it's warm and that it's worked for you.  i may consider a shorter one from there, if they have any.  thanks again!

I did this search last year, and still regret not getting last years jcrew one- it had thumb holes, which i love, and it felt substancial/warm. fairly easily found on ebay.

That said, a friend of mine has the "fjord down coat" from brooklyn industries, which seems to have a cult-like following

jcrew "Meribel"
