I know i should post this in the home section, but i really need to make a decision soon so would like a plethora of opinions. I'm moving to nyc, and need a desk for my computer. I've looked high and low- the only one I think I like is this one, which i haven't seen in person:
I want my room to be sort of cottagey, but airy, elegant, with a beachy/girly vibe (I dug up an old post on cottages, and nylabelle mentioned beachy but with a crystal chandelier- that is basically what i want my room to look like, in a nutshell. Nylabelle or anyone- where do i find a crystal chandelier for not too much $$?) Ok, long aside. I'm going to buy a cheapie dresser to paint with a design on it, so i'm not trying to match things that much. My question is, do you like this desk, do you like Sauder furniture in terms of looks/quality for the money (yes, i know its not the nicest quality, but i dont want to spend bank), and do you think i could change the knobs? The ones that come with the desk are seriously lacking. Thanks girls!
i like it, althought i know nothing about wood quality or that sort. the only thing is that it is white, so maybe ink marks, etc would show up on it? but then again, i am more messy/clumsy/careless than most people i know....
I have seen a white office collection in Office Depot. You can find nice chandeliers at Lowe's for good prices. I currently have a cottage shabby chic look in my living room. The colors are white, lavender, and a light shade of green. It all goes together very well. I was going to buy a chandelier to hang from the ceiling, but never got to it. The curtain panels are a sheer light green and I got this pink and green rose swag/vine from the craft store hanging across. Target has a lot of the cottage chabby chic stuff. I picked up a neat floral arrangment that has a glass case over it for next to nothing and it really completes the look.
I think the Sauder one is a bit bulky for a beach cottage feel. I'd have to see it in person to be sure but its details are a bit on the heavy side, if that makes any sense.
I like this one Courtney posted. Maybe with some extra pieces to make it bigger? (If you're looking for something bigger.)
As far as chandeliers, how about these from UO? They're $98 which may be too pricey but I'm sure they'll be on sale soon.
bluebirde and cortney- i really like the desks that you picked- espec. the one bluebirde also liked. It is really pretty and would make a room. The *problem* i'm worried about is storage space. As heavy looking as the first one is- it has a hutch (for my books, cds, photos, and little decorative items), a hiding spot for my computer tower (which always gets dusty and gross), a drawer for office supplies, and a hanging file, which i really like. I do love that lighter looking desk though- I'll have to think about it. I know I could create shelves and not have a hutch, but i kind of like the nooks and crannies a hutch creates. And i could get a separate little file thing, but thats another piece of furniture, could be more $$$ together, and i still wouldn't have a place for my hard drive, though i'd have a table for my printer. Grr....decisions.
Have you looked at Targets? they have a lot of furniture thats white now and i believe they have something like what you posted, but i dont know for how much.

Tati- I went a week or so ago and didn't see any I liked, but not really any white at all. Maybe my Target is slacking? I would be interested in a white antiquey looking desk- do you remember if they had anything like that?
I could be wrong, but I think it was by Shaby chic, I remember seeing the desk but didn't notice if you could by the rest of it ( the top). sorry not much help. I looked in the internet and couldn't find it there, my target's fairly new, but I would think others should have it to.
here's some more stuff. To keep it from looking bulky, I'd try to find something that will hold your computer tower, and then get a separate file cabinet or shelf.
also, my crafty and talented MIL would want me to say that it's probably easier (and cheaper) to find a plain oak desk you like at an unfinished-furniture store, and then crackle-paint it yourself.

I like the Sauder desk you first posted, but agree that it is a tiny bit heavy. I'm assuming that you assemble it at home, though, which would mean (in my experience) that the back piece of the hutch would just be a panel that you could easily leave off... unless it needs to be there to support the shelves or something (but it looks like they just attatch to each other, IMO), in which case you could just put up some of those shelf supports unterneath the top shelf (sounds so repetitive). Then, your walls would be exposed behind the shelves, so it would break up all that white. I don't know if I'm explaining right. Or you could paint the back panel the same color of your walls, if the walls are painted. Just a thought, because it seems like you really like that desk (as do I) and it really seems to fit your needs the best... and I love those knobs!
yea, it is heavy- i wish the hard drive storage was on the other side or something. its all to the right! But i've had such a hard time finding something that fits all my needs! Haha, i'm a needy/picky girl it seems. But please keep posting options! I'm hopefully seeing my room again this week (i'm going to brooklyn tuesday through friday, again, i've been there like 5 times this summer!) so I can get a better feel for what would fit the space best. My room is about 10.5' by 16.5'- so its not teeny. I'm bringing a full size bed (brass headboard), and a dresser definitely. And while I would love to be ambitious and paint my own desk, i doubt i'll have that done in time for the move. And i already want to be ambitious and paint my dresser If I don't like it in a year I'll just craigslist it as long as its still in good condition- i'm sure someone would buy it for like $200 when they see how cute it looks in my room =)
