NY next week - UN world summit
Permalink Closed

So, my husband and I are headed to NYC next week - basically the entire time the UN world summit is happening...  How much is this going to affect our trip?  We didn't have plans to tour the UN or anything, so I don't care about that, but just in general, around the rest of the city...?  I've heard about ad campaigns the UN has done for people in and around NYC to help them "get in the spirit" and remind them "everyone's a delegate"...I guess because it's going to be a major disruption?  Please reassure me that our entire trip isn't going to be ruined... (sorry in advance for whining about this - totally not important in the grand scheme of things - we've just really been looking forward to it and had no idea that this was happening the exact timeframe of our trip until yesterday)

Well I've lived in NYC for my entire life and I've lived on the east side of Manhattan for the past 3 years (though about 20 blocks away from the UN) and I have never felt like UN summits or other events are big problems. It's usually just a hindrance for traffic because they block off a lot streets around the UN which is all the way east - there isn't anything of interest in that area other than the UN so you should be fine.

The only possible problem I can think of is if your hotel is on the East Side and you are taking a taxi for a long distance because sometimes they close parts of the highway which runs right behind the UN but obviously cab drivers will know about this and all of the avenues run parallel to the highway so there are tons of alternate routes (the cab fare just might wind up being much higher than usual).

Thank you so much, cc!  That really makes me feel better...  I was picturing major disruptions....higher cab fare I'll happily take!  :)

On a totally different note, have you ever been to a taping of a show?  We have tickets (free) to the Daily Show with Jon Stewart and I was just wondering what the whole experience is like.  They say the doors open at 5:30...but they don't mention when taping actually starts...are you sitting there for hours waiting?  Is it any fun?  I love Jon Stewart, but I don't want to waste hours upon hours waiting around...

Yeah I seriously can't imagine that the UN Summit will be a big problem. Just avoid the 1st avenue area and the FDR drive between say 34th and 50th streets.

As for the taping, I've only been to one (Conan O'Brien) and it was years ago so I don't remember that many details but I definitely think I would remember waiting for hours. We were seated for a little bit before the show started but they had some sort of pre-show entertainment (it could have been a comic, I really don't remember). Hopefully someone else here has been to a taping more recently and can give you more information.
