I have both. yes both. I got my mp3 and it is only 256 I thought that would be enough for me so I just got the ipod nano, which I love.  Photos, music, schedule, games, what more could a girl ask for.  I know some mp3 have those features but I am addicted to the easy ipod. I am officially on the bandwagon.

I have an iPod Mini and I love it.  I hook it up to my computer speakers at work so I can have music there and I use it when I go walking and around the house.

A few things to keep in mind though:  if you want your entire music collection in whatever you decide to buy, then go with a full on iPod, not the Mini or the Nano.  The mini has about 1/3 of the music I want in it, which is kind of a pain.  The iPod Shuffle is good for running, but doesn't hold more than a few cd's worth of music and I don't think there's a way to hook it up to your car stereo.  But, they're about $100, so that's a plus.

As for ease of use and looks, I'm convinced the Apple's products can't be beat.  They're well designed and just pretty slick looking.  Go to Apple's website and look around at what they have to see if there's anything that will work for what you want.  If not, www.bizrate.com might have some good alternatives.  HTH!

Thanks Honey, for posting that prior post. Not sure yet, I am still stuck between an IPOD or an IRiver. I am so indecisive!!!!

i don't have either but i think there is more stuff accessory wise for ipods and they are just more universally popular so you probably will want to go with that.  In my mind it would be like when the beta max and vhs came out and everyone went with vhs even though beta was the better quality and everything was made for vhs after that and now you never hear of beta max.

I have an IRiver and think it is not very user-friendly, not as much as the Ipods.  I am a bit technologically challenged though.

I have an iRiver and love it, even though it took me some time to figure the controls. I do use all the extra functions that the ipod mini does not have: i.e the radio and voice recording. I listen to the radio when I am at the gym. One great advantage of the iRiver is that it's "droppable" - its flash memory, so if it falls nothing happens to it (I admit it - I am clumsy!). Ipod minis are also pretty hardy though. DH got me the iRiver because he said that everybody has iPods and that I am "special" (sweet man!) - and I think he made the right choice

I have an iRiver too and I love it.  For what I could afford, the iRiver gave me more than the iPod.  I love that it is a flash player, and it uses a AA battery.  So there is no charging involved.

But having never had an iPod, I can't compare them.  I googled "iRiver reviews" and although I know the reviewers are usually biased, a lot of them had both and preferred the iRiver.  It also has a very high satisfaction rating according to the reviews.

ETA:  Just in case you didn't know already, the iRiver plays .wav files and stuff too.  Not just mp3's.

I answered here: http://www.activeboard.com/forum.spark?forumID=44784&subForumID=104154&action=viewTopic&commentID=3978274&topicPage=

I've had lots of different players, most of them these days are fairly user friendly.  With Ipod you pay a premium for packaging and the cool factor.  You can get a better value with a different player (for example, iRiver).

You need to do a little research: What do you want out of it? Where are you going to use it?  Then match all your requirements to what is available on the market (or ask a geek like me   But unless you know what you want to do with it, you won't be happy with either choice.
