What do you think of this necklace?

I want to get a piece of jewelry that I can pass down to my daughter oneday - but wear myself now.

Since my daughter will be born in Sept. her birthstone is Sapphire...

I thought about getting this necklace with her Initial, My Initial and my Husbands initial (So three disks)

Do you think it is too trendy to pass down one day?

i like the idea but i don't think it's a "classic" piece.  i was trying to think that if i were to get a hand me down, i think i would just like pearls, ring, or any piece of jewelry, and maybe you could just engrave it with your initials (even if it's on the clasp or something).

i love cathy waterman jewelry at www.ylang-ylang.com.  it can get pricey, but she makes a love pendant that might be nice for $275.  it won't let me post a picture.

i'll post pics if i can think of anything else.  i also want to say, i can't believe you're still posting!!!  i see your ticker and it says ONE DAY!!!  wow.  so exciting!

I agree that it could be too trendy. You also have to consider the fact that your grown daughter might not have have the same taste as you. I probably wouldn't wear a lot of the more trendy/designery jewelry my mom has but I would wear her super plain jewelry like pearls, simple stud earrings, basic pendants etc. and I doubt I would like jewelry that was stylish in 1980 (when my mom was 30). And my mom is sort of into things with birthstones and initials and I am not at all. Not that I am criticizing your taste because I think that necklace is cute and I love your designs! It's just styles can change a lot in 30 years so you might want to go with something that seems more boring but is classic and wonderful quality.

I think it's beautiful, but agree that you should go with something simpler/ more classic. That way if she wants to she can pass it on to her daughter too!

That is what I thought. I would really love something with her birthstone - I'll keep looking I guess.

I want something a little "different" - even though I love pearls - I do have pearl studs and diamond studs that will be hers one day - I want something a little more creative.

ETA: Thank you for your honest opinions!

Hey JMR!  I think that what you picked out is nice but I agree with the other posters that you might want to get something more timeless and classic.  I am trying to find an emerald ring for my daughter, so I know how hard it is to find different & original looking jewelry with a gemstone.  My birthstone is sapphire actually, and my mom has this ring that I will inherit some day.  It's beautiful--it has a platinum setting around a big light blue milky colored sapphire.  I have always loved that ring--I think my mom's taste in jewlery sort of shaped my own, b/c I'm looking for something similar for Lucy in an emerald.  FWIW, I really liked it b/c it was different and I love the lighter colored sapphires that are not as common.  I recently posted a couple of rings with sapphires in my post about fine jewelry.  I also strongly agree with shopgirl82 about Cathy Waterman--her stuff is amazing!!  Ylang-ylang is a great store in Dallas; it's very reputable and has wonderful customer service.  I've been going there since I was a kid and they were just a little kiosk in the Galleria.  Here is a sapphire ring that I really like from their website, just to give you an idea.  It's not Cathy Waterman's but it resembles some of her pieces:

Also, if it helps any I have been looking at websites that sell antique gemstone jewelry and have found lots of awesome pieces at pretty good prices.  If you want more information, let me know.  HTHS.  Let me know what you decide and good luck on your labor--it's getting really close, right?!

ETA--Oops--the ring I am referring to is in the bottom right hand corner.
