Jewelry making girls - need help on DIY necklace project!
Permalink Closed

Hey girls I need your wise, wise wisdom on how to tackle this project.

I didn't really jump on the bead band-wagon but now feel like I really need great accessories.

So crafty girls, how would you approach this project? I have a basic idea on what to do, and have basic supplies like pliers. Just wondering if anyone has some tips or advice like what were the best glues to use to glue the ribbon on the metal links... or to even glue this at all.

Thanks very much in advance!

I will definitely post the outcome!

I'm guessing that's thread wrapped around metal links?  That would take forever to do by hand!  The ribbon, I would wrap around one link and sew it together (Like how you see on some purse straps).

i have been looking like a necklace like that!  Minus the ribbon wrapped around the links, but I wanted either a thick link metal necklace like that, or tortoise shell or wood links.  Do you know where to find that part of the necklace dot?

Always thinking alike! Funny you mention that lynnie. I tried on the above brass and colored wood necklace at Barneys. I fell in love with it but I don't think dropping $500 for a wood necklace is not really the smartest thing for me at the moment. I missed the whole bead band-wagon and really want something that's funky but refined enough for work.

Anyway, I'm not too sure about where to get stuff like that either. Does anyone have any advice for suppliers?

plastic?/resin? disc - look from Miu Miu

I love this necklace too!

My suggestion for how to achieve the look is as follows:

a-go to hobby lobby and in the jewelry section buy keychain circles in base metal.

*Edited to insert picture of key chain circle--you can get them in different sizes--this one is an inch in width.

b-connect key chain circles.

c-buy a 1/8inch or 1/4 inch ribbon and wrap it tightly around the circles one at a time.

d-secure end with fabric glue and straight pin until glue dries.  When glue dries you can remove straight pin or you can darken the tip with a black sharpie and leave the straight pin in for reinforcement.  Make sure to treat the end of the ribbon with anti-fray (this can be purchased at hobby lobby by the ribbon).

e-attach ribbon to end links, sew ends.

Yoila--Complete!

Altogether, depending on whether you can find the keychain parts in bulk or a bag of 8 or more, I would guess this would cost $15-$20 tops and an hour or two of work.

HTH!

You're so smart! That's a good idea; I never would have thought to use key chain circles.

that necklace is awesome, i'm seriously impressed that you would even consider attempting to make it. as far as links this store http://www.tohoshojiny.com/8main/ourstore.html sells them. they don't have an online catalogue, but they have a ridiculous collection of metal links. i picked up some to make my mj (well mj via vintage 80's hip-hop style) necklace.
