Do you hide all your stuffed animals? hahaha.  I don't know what to do with all the cutesy/weird things I have, I'm trying to make my room a little more sophisticated in NYC, but still have personality.

You could take all the *cutesy* items and turn them into a retro-collection by grouping them on some high shelves.

I will tell you to put away the stuffed animals.  I got rid of mine.  The only one I kept is the one I got for my 1st Christmas.  I now have him in a plastic bag stored away in my closet.  I should give him a little more respect and get a plastic container!  In my junior year of high school, I gave my room a total makeover.  I went to Kmart (Hey, I wasn't going to spend all the money I made that summer!) and got a Martha Stewart light blue and white comforter, light blue sheet set with, light blue bed skirt and did a light yellow, light blue, and white theme.  I got yellow curtains too, some new wall art, and decor.

The easy way to decorate a bedroom is head to Linen's N Things or Bed Bath and Beyond and get a coordinating set.  You can put a great look together for under $300.

I put stuffed animals on shelves in my guest room closet. They're all lined up neatly; that way, if I want to look at them, I can leave the door open, and close them when I don't want to. I won't get rid of them -- some are really sentimental to me.

Also, I think some of the cutesy things can have real meaning. I have a collection of abstract/arty dog stuff (metal or wood sculptures, picture frames, etc) that I have spread around my house with all the grownup stuff. It's what helps my house look like my house.

What kind of cutesy stuff are we talking about?  I guess that would make a difference.  I know a rule of thumb for whatever the collection is to NOT display it all at once.  Put out a few pieces in a grouping (not spread out) and rotate in new pieces every few months or so.

i dunno...sometimes i like random cutesy things. in our dining room, i got placemats from fredflare and in the middle of the table is a ceramic version of my old mini-dachshund (who has since joined the beyond) that my high school boyfriend did...

dining room

in my living room (which i don't have a good pic of) it's pretty sleek and minimalist, but there are a few hello kitty items here and there. i think it's nice to add personality quirks. makes a house feel like a home, and less like a showplace. (imo)

erin! i think your dining room fits your personality well.  also, it has just the right amt of kitchy-ness to make it cute, not childish or gaudy.
