PSA: Helping animals after Katrina
Permalink Closed

I know Katrina has caused great suffering for so many, but I get physically sick thinking about all of the animals that were killed as a result of the storm/flooding or were left behind by their owners during evacuations.

Anyway, for anyone who is interested here's information about donating to the ASPCA Disaster Relief Fund. I'm a non-working student so I don't have a ton of money to give, but this cause is close to my heart and I had to contribute.

Thanks for posting this sfclinevandy - it made me cry that people weren't allowed to take their pets w/them when they evacuated.  I don't think I could leave my pet behind.  It's so sad that all of these animals either died or got shipped off to shelters.  Pets are like part of your family.  I will definitely be donating to this fund.

Also too, if you can, call or drop by your local shelter or ASPCA to see if they are accepting donations of supplies. One shelter in my family's area was getting ready for a road trip down to LA this weekend, and they were collecting all kinds of pet supplies, unused medicine, even things like old blankets and towels--anything that could be useful to the poor animals. OK, can't think about it anymore, gonna cry if I do.

The Humane Society is takin donations too. I can't really figure out what they're doing different than the ASPCA, so I just split my donation.  (You can click the friendly banner at the top of this page to donate.)

Someone in another thread mentioned Noah's Wish, too ( http://www.noahswish.org ) -- I read up on them, and they seem wonderful, so we gave them money, too (thank you, whoever you are!)

All great efforts and I have donated to several myself. I couldn't begin to imagine what it must be like to have to leave your pets behind. I would probably be that crazy person who stayed with the pets. But, here is one more organization doing gret stuff. If you are inclined, please donate. They have been profiled on OPRAH and other national media shows - so they are legit. They have sent 14 vets from Seattle into the worst "hot spots" - to start rescuing pets. All I can think about is if I had lost absolutely everything - to realize that someone care enough to save your pet - b/c that was all you had left in the world. Ugh. This makes me so sad - and happy at the same time!

That was me! I'm so glad you donated! I've been telling everyone I know about it in the hopes that more people will donate.
