If you applying in NYC see about using a friend or family members address as your mailing address. A lot of employers do not want to deal with relocation. When I was relocating to NYC my story was that I had a place but then when I did not get a job I sublet it to a friend and moved back home but if I got the job I would in fact have a place to live. So not true but some what plausable. I think it depends on the city though.
