We got some new administrators at school this yr and they are very strict!! Especially about clothes!! I haven't gotten into trouble but know many girls who have and I am taking note on what not to wear!!!
One of the things that a girl got into trouble was with the wife beaters from Old Navy!! I love those!! But we cant wear them anymore because I guess your bra strap can show! Whatever!!!
So I was wondering if you girls have any ideas on a way to still wear my beaters without getting in trouble!!! Any ideas on how ya'll wear them would help! Thanks!!!!
is that even legal? telling students what they can and cannot wear? i mean, with uniforms, i understand... but if its not causing any trouble, should one get in trouble for it?
oh man, my hs was like this too! They made all these rules: no spaghetti straps, no short shorts, no stomach exposed, no bra straps, no minis....I can't even believe it in retrospect. I think you should try to wear strapless or racerback bras, as well as bring a little shrug or cardi as a coverup. I have a tie-front one from target that I bought for $16- you could buy a basic color and keep it in your locker in case someone says something to you.

oh, you sure can. At my school, multiple violations = suspension. Edit: they claim it is "distracting."
sorry ranchera! My school allows beaters (they have this great "pasta" analogy...spaghetti & linguine-style straps are a "no-no", lasagna-width straps are OK. LOL), so I don't have a lot of ideas. Although if you had a tank with thicker straps, maybe you could layer them?

It sure is...in my H.S. days - way back in the early 1980's, we had the same issues - but we were more covered up then. The big fashion was surfer shirts, that said things like "Mr. Zog's Sex Wax" (it's a wax for surfboards) and my senior year, the school decided we couldn't wear them. It was a big stink and even got us an article & pic in the paper, but it was still the school's call.

My school had a sort-of dress code like that... no offensive words or pictures, shoulders and stomachs had to be covered, and shorts/skirts/dresses had to be at least as long as where your fingertips hit your thighs. My father was elected to our city's School Committee and he used to tell me that the school can tell you what to wear and punish you for disobeying, but if someone were to challenge the suspension or detention or what-have-you to the School Committee, the student would win... something about freedom or speech. That may just be our school district, but I'm not sure. Anyway, I would do as the other girls suggested and wear a strapless or racerback bra and bring a cardi or shrug to coverup just incase. At my school, they used to give girls a choice when they got in trouble: take two days detention or change into their gym clothes (or clothes from the Lost and Found).
My school makes you change into some scrubs since my school is some what of the medical field, even though its a high school. But still they are gross! LOL!
I think I will try it with a strapless bra and just take a cardi just incase!
i think you should go braless in protest! how's that for distracting!! and i really don't think they can force you to wear a bra, seems sexist since boys aren't required to wear them. (and ya, boys don't have boobs, but where do you draw the line? if a girl is flat chested, can she skip the bra?)
I like the idea of covering up the top with a shrug. Or you could stock up on cool hoodies to wear over them. I'm so out of touch these days--would it be weird to wear a cute little blazer to school? I'm not sure if high schoolers do that or not.
Actually I got a cute blazer about 4 weeks ago and I am waiting for it to get a little bit cooler here in Texas so that I can finally wear it to school!!!
Crystal: Thats actually a very good point!!! LOL!
I like the idea with some hoodies and the shrugs as well!
Oh an I wore my white beater today with a strapless bra and I left my jacket over it the whole day except during lunch because it got really hot! And the VP said to me "thats a tank top" Luckily I had my jacket with me but she is sooooo picky!!!
OMG I hate school dress code. They are also VERY strict at my school-- no backless shoes (yes, that means flipflops), spaghetti shirts, sunglasses (I am in FL, and my school is NOT an indoor campus), no miniskirts, no bellybaring shirts (if even a cm is showing when you raise your hand or reach for something, you are written up). It makes getting ready in the morning so so so difficult.
I really feel for you. How much longer do you have left in hell (aka high school)?

Oh wow you cant wear flip flops and you live in FL!!!!?????!!!! LOL I am a junior so 2 more years!!!! What about you?
whoa- you can't wear tank tops??? someone should complain. I get what halleybird was saying about the spaghetti vs. lasagna thin straps, that sounds like a normal high school policy. No wife beaters is just....too strict.
