I am invited to a good friend's wedding and need suggestions. Here are the details:

Very Close friend, we almost asked each other to be in our weddings., but we aren't quite that close.
4:30pm Early October Wedding
At a fancy hotel in Atlanta
Bridesmaid Dresses are long, satin, and burgandy- Groomsmen in tuxes.
Buffet Dinner

Most wedding that I have been to in Atlanta that are from 6pm on people wear short strapless cocktail dresses, even when the guys have worn tuxes?

I am stumped, I would love suggestions at any price, b/c I will shopping out my own closet.

Sounds fancy to me.  I'd dress up.  Fancy skirt and a top?

Perhaps the early time was because of other scheduling conflicts?

i would do an above the knee dress in chiffon.  possibly brown with gold accessories for accents.  if you don't have brown (it just screams fall wedding color to me), any jewel tone with gold or silver accents.

i will be attending an early fall wedding that starts at 2:30p so it made me think twice about what to wear as well. i'm leaning toward this dress (which is similar to what shopgirl82 just described as far as length, material, color). it's sparkly around the waist only so i can wear a jacket or wrap in church and then take it off for cocktails which are at 5p. i am very sure that appropriate attire for a wedding is a bit different in atlanta than where i am, but i really have seen it all at weddings recently. just use your good taste and judgment and you'll look great.

A few weeks ago I went to a 4:30 wedding in Connecticut. The actual ceremony was in a church and the reception was in a really nice hotel. I wore a halter dress that hit just below my knee. The dress was a really light turquoise chiffon fabric with an Indian inspired pattern that had golds and reds in it. I wore gold/bronze heels and bronze earrings. I guess I would describe the dress as a very dressy sundress and I felt very comfortable with what I was wearing, not too dressy but not too casual (my dress was about as dressy as the dress posted above). As at most weddings, the guests were wearing a wide rage of outfits from long black gowns (which I thought was a little too much) to a skirt and top and sundresses. I really think you'll be fine whatever you wear but I was definitely comfortable in my outfit.

I think knee-length is perfectly appropriate for a 4:30 fancy wedding.  I have been to many similar weddings, and as long as the dress is in a dressier fabric, you should be fine.

In general, I don't wear long dresses, so the only time I did was because they specified black tie, with a 4:30 ceremony at a hotel.

Have fun!!
