snow boots/shoes for midwest/canada travel
Permalink Closed

I'll be spending the holidays in the midwest and canada- so I am i need of shoes/boots for snow and icy/slushy sidewalks. (went to the midwest last year without boots and regretted it)

These will be for casual use- grocery store runs, etc etc (though, they may make airport appearances....perhaps i should get a separate, less heavy duty pair for traveling?) I think I like the more "unisex hiking" type styles, rather than anything too overtly feminine (a lot of the styles remind me of little girls boots)- but any and all recs are welcome! What has proven practical for you?

tia!

(fyi- ive never owned uggs, but if they are what would be the most practical- i can deal with being stereotyped- lol)

I have a pair of Sorel boots that I use for all my outdoor activities. They are super warm and waterproof.

I don't like the look of Uggs, but they sure are warm, so I wear them anyway. However, if it is slushy outside, they are very slippery.

Not sure of how these would hold up in the terrain but I've had Bear Paw and Uggs and you wouldn't really know the difference:

I got a pair of genuine suede "Uggs" just like these at Target last week for $20. They're cozy, comfy and practical, I highly recommend them!

I find Uggs really slippery, I like something with more grip for our nasty Canadian winters

I live in Chicago and I prefer to wear a higher shaft pair of winter boots.  There is absolutely nothing fun about getting snow up your leg.  Nothing.

shoes_iaec1240565.jpgMerrell $170.00 @ shoes.com  I like these because they are waterproof, have a rubber sole and a zipper (tying and untying laces is a pain in the neck when your fingers are frozen)  Plus they look sleek enough to wear in public and still feel stylish.

shoes_iaec1166048.jpgThe North Face Alana $167 @ shoes.com  They are tall, warm, have side zippers and good traction on the  sole.  Plus North Face is good quality.

I would definitely get Uggs for when it's cold but not wet out. They may not be the most attractive thing, but they're so warm & cozy!

I need to find myself a pair of boots for when it's snowy & wet out. I always wear my Uggs, but they have terrible traction so I end up slipping & falling, and they're not waterproof so my feet end up getting wet. bleh

Btw, you might consider Hunter Wellies. You could use them for both rain & snow, although I've never owned a pair so maybe they're not 100% waterproof - I know a lot of the cheap brands of rainboots end up being not fully waterproof.

6Pm has Emu (an Ugg knockoff) on sale today.  There's a link above to 6PM so I won't post it, but you can find the deal under the Holiday Bliz section on the site.

I have these Kamik boots for snow:

They're super warm and waterproof, in fact I use them for snowshoeing.  Unless you're giong to be shoveling driveways or doing some major sledding on your trip, I think you could probably get away with something less obviously snow-boot-ish.  I don't care for duck boots (like the first 5 pairs you posted) myself because I find them slippery on the bottom and my toes always get cold in them.

These look pretty versatile to me, and would be relatively normal-ish looking under jeans when you're not trudging through deep snow:

I live in Chicago and my uggs get pretty soggy in the wintery/slushy mess... I have a pair of north face I love but I really like my hunter boots with fleece liners in the winter...
