weird. I have no idea but I heard about the reserves thing too... apparently the refinaries (sp) were messed up because of the hurricane? I heard on the news to expect gas to go up by at least $1 per gallon by the end of the week.

This is so freaky! I'm filling up tonight. Hopefully, my gas stations still have gas. I still have 1/2 a tank left, but I don't want to run out and not be able to get more!

This certainly sucks if there is no gas around. Especially w/ Labor Day weekend coming up. I mean, I know there are people dying and so many people have lost homes, but Labor Day weekend is huge for the tourism industry and for businesses everywhere. If people can't do the things they were planning this weekend, I can't help but think the economy is going to be in bad shape.

Not sure what is going on with gas but most oil refineries are located in the area between Baton Rouge and New Orleans and they are not operating right now. Also most oil rigs in the Gulf that are south of LA, MS, & AL are not functional right now due to damage or crew evacuations so there is a good chance places will be out of gas.

I think this may have some truth to it because when I went out on my lunch break a bunch of the gas stations had cones up to keep people out. Very weird.

I thought it was only Atlanta that was having shortages?

I know I paid $3 a gallon today for regular.

In ATL today, some gas stations were charging more than $7/gallon for regular, however, there were also stations charging $2.79/gallon for regular. The lines were horrendous.

My uncle owns the gas distribution rights for Amoco in Eastern KS and Western MO and he says that the pipeline/refining issues from the hurricane meant that some supply was disrupted, but all will be back on track by the weekend and if people were not going to run out of gas today, there was no reason to wait in line.

I, unfortunately left for work today running on fumes, so by the end of the day, I paid 70 cents more per gallon than I would have if I had gotten up earlier and stopped on the way to work. I also had to wait in line for 20 minutes. People were crazy...getting mouthy and filling up container after container with gas.

Hmmmm, I paid 2.69 for gas yesterday morning and I paid 3.15 today. Very odd since Katrina does not effect the gas that's ALREADY FREAKIN IN THE GAS STATIONS GROUND! For real, it would take a month for gas prices to increase from Katrina. Also, very interesting that this occurs over labor day weekend

No problems getting gas in Nor Cal... however it was just under $3.

A ton of stations here (Columbia, SC) ran out of regular gas today. All of them still had Premium...but at some places that was as high as $3.29. At the stations that had regular left it was as high as $3.09 & there were lines into the street to get it. It was crazy! (Especially considering when I got gas the other day it was $2.46)

The reason for the gas price increase has to do with the hurricane that just hit Louisiana. A lot of oil is refined in Southern Louisiana. With the hurricane crippling the refining of Louisiana... gas prices are starting to go up. I also think they might be diverting some of the gas that's produced into rescue efforts and displaced refugees from the New Orleans area. Lines for gas in Baton Rouge are at least a half hour long and many have ru out of gas.

Gas was $3.19 here this morning.

I watched part of "In the Path of Katrina" last night on ABC (I thought I was going to be watching Lost, but this was on instead). Apparently, they expect this extreme price hike to be temporary b/c of what Retro mentioned about the Gulf Coast area supplying gas to other parts of the country. Not that gas is going to be cheap, but they expect that the gas lines to the Northeast will be restored by as early as the weekend. Those same lines run through Atlanta. But that also means there may be gas shortages until they restore those lines.

After I saw this post yesterday I called my husband and told him to fill up the car on the way home. He did and it was $3.85 for regular here in Northern VA. Not sure how much it is today. We were planning on taking a little day trip to Richmond, but now I don't know. We will probably still go though, just to get out for a bit.

Yes, we were supposed to go to the beach (Atlantic City) this week, but b/c of gas prices, I don't think that we will be going now.

From what I'm starting to understand, it sounds like the lines themselves were not broken, but that there is no power going to the lines to move it along.

I'm hoping we don't have to change our travel plans this weekend. We're planning on going to my parents' condo about 3 hours away. The price issue sucks, but wouldn't change our plans. If there were no gas to be had between here and there though, that might change our plans. (I do realize this is pretty trivial in the big scheme of things when there are so many people dead after the hurricane. I was looking forward to a weekend away though.)

supply and demand! that is the reason there were gas stations running out of gas.

when the news announced yesterday that by the end of the day- gas would be over $3.00- people rushed out to get gas (creating a huge demand) and the stations ran out. we are not out of gas. the stations allocate for what they usually sell in an average week... so when something like this happens- it shocks the system. people were freaking out around where i live...

i have 1/2 tank left and refuse to purchase gas for over $3.00- ridiculous gouge IMO.
