OMG the timing on this thread is PERFECT. Yesterday I spent my break between classes sitting outside at school and fashion-watching. I go to FIT, so the fashion-watching there is some of the best imaginable, for both really good and really bad. I observed many many fashion crimes:

--cowboy boots & skirt look gone awry. This very short, fairly heavyset girl was wearing a below-the-knee skirt with big, slouchy cowboy boots, and the combination made her legs look like tree stumps. Please do not take this as me dumping on girls who are not tall and thin, because this girl was otherwise adorable, but the bulky boots and longish skirt created one of the most unflattering effects I have seen in a really long time. Sometimes you just have to admit that a certain look doesn't work for your body type, you know?

--skirt over jeans. I really, really wish this look would die. With maybe one exception out of every 300 applications, it looks sloppy.

--skintight jeans that had essentially the same silhouette as a pair of tights. No exaggeration. i mean they were not just tight, they had to have been like 20% lycra because they were essentiall jean tights.

--crazed Hairspray-style bouffant hairdo.

--extremely fair-skinned girl wearing a poufy skirt the exact color of her skin. Just--no. I always find clothing that matches one's skin tone to be extremely unflattering; it looks flat and dead in comparison to the more complex, varied hue of actual skin.

Oh god, I am in law school. The crimes against fashion comitted here every day are, quite simply, horrendous. Recently I have witnessed the following:

- Toe socks

- An older gentleman (professor) wearing women's dockers (I can tell by the darts in the back, the pleats, the zipper facing and the fact that the legs were tapered) I'm assuming either he did not notice he put on his wife's pants. Or he finds them more comfortable than the men's dockers. Either are quite possible considering my profs...

- A profeessor with a collection of brass-buttoned blazers, worn over knit dresses in colors like plum, forest green and gold (the fall color, not the lame') Probably she last bought clothes in 1992. She is one of the great legal scholars here, and finished first in her class at Yale by the way. but she cannot buy her own clothes.

- Nylon trouser knee socks worn with backless pumps - and capris!

- Pants worn by guys who belt at or above the natural waist

- Those baggy, shapeless, scoop neck tees that everyone buys from Ann Taylor

- Short, red snow boots worn with capris - in August

That is all I can think of right now, but I bet there's more. Y'all would die in this place...

Bwah!  This is hilarious.

The other day I saw a lady in the parking lot who was probably 45 or so wearing some random generic t-shirt TUCKED IN to a pair of blue, pink, yellow, green, red, purple, etc. TIE DYED pants with an elastic waist, lovely volume in the hip area, and a delicately tapered leg.  With white Reeboks.  The best part--one of the tie-die swirlies landed conveniently on her left butt cheek.  A. Mazing.

Also there's a lady my friend and I look for every week at the Friday night outdoor concert.  She's young, maybe 30-ish and has a nice physique and everything but wears the most RIDICULOUS outfits.  the most memorable was back at the beginning of August, probably the hottest it was here all summer (probably about 93 degrees in early evening) and she wore an oversized red and white flannel shirt, a red cordouroy a-line mini (barely cleared her butt) that had snaps down the front and red patent 5-inch stilletoes.  I can't wait to see what she wears this week.

I love these people though -- they just need some Stacy & Clinton action! "Classic Teacher" -those sleeveless rayon shifts that fall to about the ankle. (Never seen them look good on anyone.) "Sporty Teacher" - knee-length jean skirt, disney shirt & running shoes w/socks OR shapeless capris in a solid color, shapeless T in another solid color (or stripes!) "Matchy Teacher" -- patterned capris, usually black or white and a bright color. Matching brightly-colored sweater, usually matching brightly-colored shoes.   Halleybird, there are tears in my eyes from laughing so hard at this!! You are so right -- thanks for the laugh!!!

happy to be of service.

A guy walked out of Trader Joes last weekend wearing a faded tee and old jeans (I'll deal with that...) with a faded navy blue BATHROBE and a pair of Uggs with the shaft cut off so they looked like shredded slippers. His female companion (presumably wife) also wore a bathrobe, BTW.

This is great! I guess I need a bathroom then!

This has to be my favorite thread ever. Luckily I haven't seen myself in any of your posts, but it's a great (albeit seemingly obvious) lesson in what not to wear.

Yeah, I'm so glad I read this...I was thinking about donning my bathrobe over a cute camisole when I go out this Saturday night.  hehehe.

This isn't recent, but the post reminded me of something that happened a couple of years ago.  I bought some of those pajama bottoms at Old Navy w/ the drawstring.  I still have them, they're bright red w/ big grey and white hearts all over them.  They're very feminine and VERY obnoxious.  Anyway, I bought them and the hubby made fun of me.  A couple nights later, on Valentine's Day, we went to a basketball game.  The young man sitting next to me had on his Valentine's Day ensemble (V-day head to toe), complete w/ my pajama bottoms!  It was hilarious!

Today at lunch...there was a woman whose black pants were so tight you could see that she had some cellulite on her thighs as she walked.  I have never seen such tight pants.  I knew that white pants could make lumps obvious, but I thought black was fairly safe.  Apparently not so!  Poor woman.  I bet the pants used to fit and she really liked them a lot.  They did not do her justice!

Nominate that girl for What Not to Wear.

I have another one.  OK, two days ago I sat through a committee meeting at the college where I work.  It lasted  2.5 hrs    To amuse myself, I started looking at what people were wearing.  The worst offenders were:

1.  the floral, shapeless, I give up dress with a white button up ss shirt worn over it and black flat sandals

2.  shapeless denim jumper with floral embroidery on bodice, white cap sleeve t shirt, chunky tan sandals (I used to wear this until you ladies saved me from fashion disaster )

3.  bright blue oversized blazer, black top (with cleavage hanging out), --couldn't see the bottoms.

4. shapeless, floral shift dress with a matching floral shapeless jacket.

Today I saw this girl wearing a major crop top with shorts.  She looked quite slutty.  That is a look to keep at home, not out shopping!  That reminds me of the other month when I was out at the mall with my sister and I saw this girl wearing SUPER short shorts VERY low rise with the button and zipper UNDONE, no underwear!  Me and my sister looked at each other with our jaws nearly on the floor!  That was one skanky ho!

Oh, and I also saw a girl wearing clear plastic high heel sandals!  They are like the ones strippers wear.

Lord, I see them every day because I'm one critical bee-yach!  Mostly I see both teenagers and old-enough-to-know-betters wearing belly baring tops with their disgusting blobs of fat hanging over their too tight butt pocketless jeans.  And I won't even go into camel toe................  Come on, people.  Do you even look in the mirror???  Or do you see those rolls of fat and think, "man, I'm looking sexy today!"

Ah, the "muffin top".

Oh, these were much worse than the muffin tops.  I'm talking full-on blubber rolls.  Front and side.

My husband does that too, I can't completely break him out of it... At least now he agrees to wear dress socks with dress shoes!
