I imagine we won't be hearing from them for a while - hopefully they got out - I think most people evacuated. My parents are about 70 miles north, so I'm holding my breath as well... But even that far away they are expecting to be without power for a week or 2. What a nightmare.

I really hope that everyone is okay.  Hopefully they are staying with friends or relatives and can check in with us to let us know.

I hope so too - I'm anxious to hear - I've been watching the weather channel since about 5 AM - ugh, makes me sad.

I know what you mean! I've been reading and re-reading blogs, news, etc. all morning. I'm so freaked out. I don't live anywhere in the path of Katrina but it's so incredibly shocking and disturbing that all I can do is to watch/read in horror.

I know some people in Gulfport who live about 200 yards from the coast. They evacuated but I'll be surprised if anything is left when they get home.

My BFF is supposed to be getting married in New Orleans in October. Any thoughts on whether the city will be inhabitable by then?

Looks like it's too soon to tell exactly how much damage. The main thing at this point would be the flooding - I mean really, parts of NO flood after a heavy rain, much less a hurricane. Plus they are saying some of the water pumps are....ironically....under water. I would think by Oct things will be ok. But you never know.

Weather channel just said it would probably be a month before everyone in NO had power restored. Man that sucks - it's really hot.

hopefully it's change since then, but yesterday on CNN they were saying that it would probably be 120+ days before they could even start to pump the water out since the machines will be underwater and not useable. So sad.

Laken, are you parents in BR?

My brother goes to Loyola, and he got to BR okay, but his freshman year is being postponed due to the storm.  Poor guy.  Like someone else said, they are predicting 4-6 weeks without electricity for a lot of BR and NO.

My parents/family is all in the Hammond / Ponchatoula area which is right in between BR & NO - I haven't talked to them yet today - My mom's phones aren't working right now & she charged up her cell & turned it off to save the battery, so she is supposed to call later today to let me know everyone is ok. I am a bit of a nervous wreck today.

Plus my bro-in-law is a state trooper & was supposed to be working in all this - for the idiots that don't do what they are told - which really ticks me off. I say if you are too stupid to heed the warnings, you are on your own.

I hope LSUBatgirl and Prissy are ok and anyone else that I'm forgetting.  Girls you and your family are in my thoughts. Laken1-take care of yourself too.  I can't imagine what you're going through, it must be really tough being in limbo right now.

Hi everyone!  I am safe and in Chicago at job training.  I'm pretty sure Prissy evacuated. Here is what I know:

Baton Rouge has some flooding but its in parts that usually flood.  Electricity is out and may take a day or two to get connected up again.  I think my parents were saying they were predicting 5 inches of rain in BR today from this mess.

The BF lives in BR and goes to school in Hammond.  His school is postponed indefinetly right now.  He is from Meraux, LA which is in St. Benard Parish which is east of NO and where the eye hit.  At 10 am that area was under 12 feet of water.  The levee for the Miss River broke sorta near his parent's house.  They aren't expecting much of a house when they can finally get back to NO.  All of his family evacuated to BR so they are safe but that is about it.

Parts of NO that have never flooded before are under water and so there is no telling how long this is going to be and when people can go back.  Unfortunately people didn't evacuate and there are now bodies floating in the water in the eastern parts of NO.  Looting has started. Boil orders are in effect for the city.  Just one huge mess since it came too fast and they couldn't evacuate in time. oh and part of the superdome roof did come off.

I'll post updates as soon as I hear more.

lsubat, glad you are safe. If it makes you feel better, my DH's dad lives off highland & they just got lights back about 15 minutes ago.

I heard from my sister but that's it so far. I can't get my mom at all, and neither can my sister, but her "real" phone is out as well & cell signals are the pits. As of 8 am this morning, the roof on my mom's shed (and I use that word loosely since it houses heavy equipment, tractors, etc - huge) & the roof on their barn were gone. And that was before it really got bad, so we'll see.

Sorry to hear all that about those details from NO...so sad. Mobile & Gulfport are both reporting 8-9 feet of water in their downtown areas. what a mess.
