leather couches and dogs/cats?
Permalink Closed

Ok so my brother is thinking about getting new leather couches, I am worried because I have 2 cats and an 80 lb pit bull who thinks she is a lap dog. The guy keeps telling him that it is good leather and the animals wont hurt it. I am afraid he is lying to sell the couches and my brother is going to yell at me cause the animals destroyed his new couches. I just got new couches in my living room and was very careful to get animal friendly and forgiving material.

Is leather going to stand up to the dog having play sessions including her race around the house and all of the furniture. I am trying to avoid a fight. I think I can talk him out if it if I need too, just tell him they are ugly and he will believe me (total boy), even though I think they would be perfect for his living room.???

Cats claws are so tiny that they will puncture it. As for the dog, if she doesn't puncture it, she will scratch it pretty darn well. I wouldn't get them.

A friend of mine has a leather couch and his little teeny cat has destroyed it. She has picked one area to shreds. He doesnt care cause the cat is his baby, but if you care I say dont do it!!

ETA: I know nothing about cats. But with dogs...

It's do-able. I have two big dogs (about 60 lbs, and one has ragged nails b/c he chews on them) and our couches look great. You have to get a really good leather, though.

I can't remember the exact terms, although I am sure someone else does, but our couches are anondized and something else, so when/if they scratch, you can't see it. Our dogs are not supposed to be on the couches, but they do get on there, especially when they're playing (and not disposed to listening to me).

We also have a leather ottoman made of cheaper stuff (our set didn't come with an ottoman), and you can already see the scratches in that one. Another thing to consider is to just get a warranty -- we paid an extra $100 or something, and our furniture store will fix it, even if it does get torn or chewed on.

HTH!

I don't have a dog so I don't know about that ,but I have 3 cats.As far as their claws go I keep them trimmed so they are not extremely pointy and sharp and I have no problem with them putting holes in the sofa.I would not know about the scrathing ,because mine always youse there scrathing post.
