I love the look of appliques and embroidery, but everything that has it is so dang expensive! I've been thinking of trying my hand at creating some pieces - has anyone done this? At first I was thinking of starting off with iron-on appliques on cotton tees, and gradually increasing in difficulty.
Something like this?
On a tee like this?
Thoughts? Suggestions? Anyone want to try this with me?

That sounds really cute!! I love the color combination. The only thing is, I've heard that that kind of applique doesn't always stay on well - you might want to sew it a little after ironing on, just to be sure.
Super cute idea! I've thought about doing something similar with a beater tank. You could get some leaf appliques and layer them up the strap of a beater and it'd look super cute. Definitely try it and let us know how it turns out!
Okay - good to know I'm not totally crazy thinking this could be cute! Yay!
Thanks for the tip Splash - Depending on what kind of applique/design I go with I think I'll either go around the entire perimeter with embroidery floss, or at least tack it down in key places.
I think that's a great idea and I've been planning on doing something similar myself!
There was this very pretty brown cami on Free People's web site a while back that I'm hoping I can copy. It had a few lace ribbons sewn along and beneath the top edge. I'm planning on using a cami like this:
Wow. I bought some appliques last week to do this very thing. I just got some cheapy ones at the dollar store but I am hoping it will work out ok. Next I am going to try actually embroidering! I think the green leaves on the purple top will look great.
and splash, thanks for the heads up, I will put a few stitches around the iron on.

Great idea - I've been doing embroidery on ON tanks & I'm so excited & proud of myself. Then I have original tanks that I really love....I hadn't thought of appliques - great idea!
For those of you wanting to try embroidery, this site has less "ducky in a bonnet" stuff - if your mom embroidered when you were little, then you know what i mean! www.sublimestitching.com

Yes by hand and i think it's easy. If you can iron & sew a button, i think you can do it. Well, outlining is easy - filling in is harder but i haven't done it much. I got that stitch-it-kit on the sublime site - the directions are VERY easy, but i got mine at amazon for about $8. These are the last 2 that i did, well, 2 that were already loaded in photobucket
sorry so big, like someone else (honey?) said - photobucket pictures are huge or tiny.
