Has anyone ever actually done this? I have a ton of old gold jewelry from my childhood/high school days that I don't know what to do with. Thought it might be worth seeing what I could get for it.
Most of it is 10-14K gold, like braceletes and pendants from old junior high and high school boyfriends.
Don't do a mail in type place They are a rip off. But if you seriously want to cash it in a legit local jeweler will likely give you scrap price by weight, which these days could earn you a good chunk of change.
I have no real info except that DH's friend's wife is doing house parties along this line. She invites friends to bring their unwanted gold jewelry, someone who is a professional comes in to weigh/pay, and she gets 10% of the night's total.

What? That is crazy. There is a place in our mall with a website where you can 'calculate' your goods. I just have a few things but it seems like it is about $400!
I did this, but I dealt directly with a gold refinery. If you can't deal directly with a refinery, the second highest payer might be a jeweler. You might want to call around and ask what they're paying per troy ounce for 14k and 10k.
This is who I went to to sell my gold. I actually met the guy in his home office since they wouldn't let people go to the refinery because of security reasons (he was also a former member of a motown band - random, but interesting!) http://www.northernrefineries.com/
If there are any stones in the jewelry, remove them before scrapping.
