Athletic Shoe Recs?
Permalink Closed

I need some new athletic shoes BADLY!  I have a couple of 'fashion' pairs that are cute but not very cushy or supportive, so can't be used for actual physical activity .  I'm looking for some serious workout shoes - will be used for walking/running.  I only require that they be less than $100 and not to chunky.  Can you help?

i have a pair of saucony's and i am very happy with them. even better i got them on sale so they were only abt. $50!

i had really wanted nike shox and was prepared to spend the money for them, but tried them on and really didn't like them. apparently they are made for narrow feet or high arches, neither of which i have, and i just felt pressure on the sides of my feet. also, for someone who is used to wearing flips or heels, i just felt like they were too bulky or had too much rubber or something and they didn't even fit under my jeans.

lady foot locker was having a great sale a little bit ago, i would go there and try on a few, walk around, etc.

if you're going to be running i seriously suggest you go to a running store and have them fit you for shoes. unless you have something seriously wrong with your feet like i do (i pronate like crazy) they can probably find something that works for you (but i still paid right around $100). good shoes are so important, and if you exercise with the wrong shoes you put yourself at greater risk for injury.

I just bought these, they are onsale and cheap if you buy the youth versions. But they are kind of chunky, more so when u wear them with jeans and less so with shorts. I love them bc they are super cushy.

I second the running store.  I go to one to buy my shoes and they make me run down the street to see my running style.  Kind of embarrassing but also comforting.  If they can't get you shoes less than $100, go somewhere else!  That is a totally reasonable price.

I use New Balance shoes because I could buy wides in them (my feet swell when I run).

I only wear asics, they are great for my foot. Someone reccomended I try them and now I only wear asics for running and sports stuff. It does depend on your foot but these are my faves.

Like Alikat, my feet swell up a lot after activity and I also have wide feet to begin with. I too am a fan of New Balance, but it really is dependent on your foot and the activity you'll be doing.

I second Honey's suggestion.  Before I went to a running store, I had no idea I pronated.  My New Balance's were $120, but it's worth it.  You have to live with your body for the rest of your life, and running puts a lot of wear and tear on your joints/back.  It's worth the extra money to have shoes that fit properly, and that will protect your body from injury.

To kind of go on what the running store votes said

If you are going to work out and be serious about it, you definately need to know your feet.  I have been running and playing sports all my life, so luckily I have grown to know my feet and its needs in a shoe.

Things you look for if you want to avoid going to a running store or don't have one:

a. arch- the the arches of your feet wholly supported.  I have high arches and asics were the only running shoe that really made them with a high arch

b. width- your feet swell (especially in the summer) when you exercise.  Make sure the sneakers are not too tight.  I have found that Nike shoes are generally more narrow.

c. cushion- If you are going to be running long distances, you need a moderate cushion, something that won't weigh your feet down, but also won't hurt your knees.  I have to use lots of cushion because I have bad knees and I can't run long distances.

d. pronation- I have never been able to look at a shoe and decide whether they were good for pronation.  All that I can say is based on reputation if you walk on the insides or outsides of your feet, you pronate and new balance is very good for that.  To tell if you pronate look at your shoes and look at what side of the sole is most worn.

You also might want to look at running websites as well.

Good Luck!
