Date tonight, can't decide which dress (I am a dress girl - nothing else is an option). So it's a pretty casual thing - drinks and possibly light dinner at sort of a little french cafe thing. Can't decide which dress... if either at all. If it helps, the guy is the creative type, with an eye for design, so I have chosen two dresses that I think are sort of intersting in terms of structure or pattern.
This one is pretty flattering on me.... having shoe issues. My C Ronsons are too painful so I am wodnering if the rope espadrilles I am wearing today are too clunk. And I can't figure out what purse to carry but I think my brown botkier might be too heavy/cowgirl looking.....
These are the shoes:
Other choice - this marimekko dress. the strap cross cutely in the back and it's sort of linen. I do not plan to mimic her poor choice of shoes and hose (WTF?). Too dressy? What kind of shoes? I usually wear this with black choo sandals, but think that's way too dressy for tonight. Accessories?

I do think the second one is a little too dressy, it is gorgeous, but I'd wait for a different occasion. The first one gets my vote. (Also cute) I am not too sure about accessories, but yah the brown shoes and bag seem a bit off. How about simple strappy sandals and a clutch? I think the dress is casual enough so that you can have dressy accessories.
Fun! What a great day for a date too - it is so beeeeeautiful out. I vote marimekko dress, because it's so pretty and I am not feeling the shoes with the first dress. And I'm guessing you have a pair of black strappy sandals you could wear with it. A beaded necklace (preferably longer) would help make it more casual.
I like the first one bettre for tonight. The second dress is great but a little dressy- I think you'll be able to dress it down in the fall when it's not so hot out though (I'm picturing it with a great pair of boots, maybe a chunky cardigan...).
The shoes you posted look like they'll look cute, but if you want dressier a pair of neutral starppy sandals might work to.
This is tougher than I thought. I really don't have any shoes that would be good with either dress.
Luckily, there IS a Hecht's across the street - I could snap something up on sale and hope it doesn't hurt...
I do think I have a clutch that could work with the first dress. But, yeah, I have to admit to myself that maybe these espadrilles are not so sexy (damn! so comfy!)
UGH. I just wore my preferred date outfit (black james perse jersey dress with funky new french handbag and dollyannas) on Saturday (with a friend, not a date) and it's not clean.

Fun, fun! I am totally going to copy you and have the ST girls dress me for my date too.
I agree with the other girls that the first dress is v. cute for this occasion. Is there any way your Dollyannas could work with it? (Or are they black? I was thinking the pink multi-colored miiiiight work, but I haven't seen a pic in a while). Otherwise, I think light green or teal shoes would be pretty.
Just realized I am adding nothing to this thread, other than my excitement over your date and pretty dress.

i prefer the first outfit, but think that the wedges pictured are a little too clunky. what about a a pair of neutral strappy sandals or dressier flips?
this is really tough. I think the first dress is definitely the one but what to wear with? I agree with the others that it is so festive that you probably won't need accessories.
Let us know if you end up buying a pair of shoes and what they look like.
LOVE both dresses but agree that the 2nd one might be too dressy. Wear the 1st one but with different shoes....maybe gold sandals if you have them, with a clutch that had these colors or gold in it and minimal jewelry (maybe JUST a gold bangle or JUST gold earrings).
Oooh! Definitely the first one. It's the perfect day to wear it! It's so summery. I think you should just go to Hecht's and find a pair of shoes there.
I like the 2nd dress better, but I'm always a little dressier than everyone else, so take that for what it's worth. It's just so pretty and could be dressed down with a pair of sparkly flip-flops and a few long beaded necklaces like someone above suggested. How pretty!
You know, and call me crazy if you want, but I think the marimekko might look pretty freaking awesome with a pair of cowboy boots. I don't know - I'd have to see it in person but it would definitely be funky and dress the dress down a bit.
i know you'll look fab in either dress (and have fun on your date) but i personally like the 2nd one. i think the print is really cool, and that it only looks dressy b/c they styled it weirdly. i like the idea of strappy sandal with a lower heel like this
or a black strappy sandal with a wood or cork sole along these lines, but in black
somthing with a different sole would keep it more casual.
I *do* have the aerosoles holly pitchers (like the dollyanna) with the neutral suede/gold strappies. Damn... no pics on the web. -- Edited by dc at 15:16, 2005-08-17
Well, I know what they look like b/c I'm wearing them right now and I think that would look fab with your dress!
Argh - ok, it's decision time! Now that I am home and have tried on both dresses, the black actually is more casual than I'd thoguht - it's a thick woven linen-ish (but not thin/wrinkly like linen) material.
Either way, think I will wear hair in a loose wavy knot at nape with a sweeping bang, a la Naomi Watts (I wish! I don't feel like doing big hair tonight, and I have big hair) and small - like an inch length - gold filigree earrings in a diamond shape with tiny little diamond-shaped danglies. They're small but exquisite. And glowy yet natural makeup in bronzy neutrals.
So do I wear the top dress plus gold holly pitchers, and natural leather kooba pleated clutch... a bit more demure
OR
above hair and earrings but with the black dress and low-heeled (2-inch) black jimmy choo slides (2 small straps across foot with 1 vertical connecting them, very bare and simple) with EITHER coral bulga with gold hardware OR white jimmy choo pleated bag w/gold hardware (this one might be too dressy...).
Help - one hour to go! Vote!
