Thanks for all the info.  I know costs vary based on car, state, and driving record but I just wanted a general idea.  Now I kind of feel like my lack of car costs justifies my high rent.   lynnie - I actually usually find cars to be really inconvenient and traffic drives me bananas.  I feel so much more in control when I can walk to most places and I don't mind waiting for public transportation once in a while because I can read while doing so and I don't feel like I'm wasting my time.   I hated it when I lived at home and when I was away at college because I could hardly do anything without getting in my car and driving.  So perhaps I am just meant to stay a NYer.  Because I'm obviously totally neurotic.

hey, cc, I feel the same as you.  I like reading on the bus, or listening to music. And sometimes having a car does seem like a pain. If you don't feel you are missing out on anything( ie I cant really go on long trips without some advance, and often complicated, planning) then stick with living where you are.  Everyone I know who has a car says they couldn't possible live without a car but that is because their lives are now engineered toward their having a car. If your life is conducive to being carless, stick with it!! And my grandmother never had her license either! She took the bus to visit us, and she walked to the grocery store every day.
