Hip NYC restaurants

Okay NYC ladies, the bf and I are taking a trip (my first, yay!) to NYC in a few weeks.  We would like to go out to a nice dinner 2 nights that we are there so I would love your suggestions of a good steakhouse and the new trendy hip place to eat (not too expensive though - maybe $100 or so without drinks and tip) .  We are staying at the Swissotel on Park Ave if that helps with suggestions.  TIA!

Oh, any cool lounge suggestions would be much appreciated as well:).

The only steakhouse in NYC that counts is Peter Lugers but that's in Williamsburg. Unless you are serious about steak, I would probably pass the trip to Brooklyn.

Excellent places for steak:
- Brasserie (53rd St b/t Park & Lex I think the address is 100). It looks like a shape-ship inside and the beouf for two is delicious. However, downside is that it's smack in the business area but positive side is it's one block from the 6 train so you can head downtown and dance off that beurre blanc.
- Strip House (downtown / east village) I haven't been here but cc's sister went there. I think she had a good time. It's burlesque themed which is kinda funny.
- Pastis for steak frites... or Florent for steak frites... or Balthazaar for steak frites or Les Halles for steak frites (more for frites than steak here).

Some of my other favorite restaurants, they are hip but in different ways. Some places are dressy go to be seen places, others are places where it's more casual but definitely draws a hip crowd... but all are delicious.

  • Five Points
  • Blue Ribbon
  • Blue Ribbon Bakery (more for lunch than dinner)
  • The Spotted Pig
  • Spice Market (food is good but not fab but the cocktails are delicious and totally hip vibe. waitresses wear backless uniforms! ep!)
  • Bivio
  • Florent (they are open 24 hours)
  • Jewel Bako (just get the tasting menu don't bother with anything else. my bf almost cried after tasting the chef's special eel.)
  • Good (really casual place and inexpensive. a good place for brunch or lunch. get the green goddess salad!)
  • Butter (I've only had a cocktail here but the atmosphere is super duper trendy.. almost too much)
  • Supper
  • Prune (very tiny - had breakfast there once but heard dinner was better)
  • El Ray del Sol (my FAVORITE NYC oasis! hidden backyard with live traditional guitarist most nights. best margaritas ever.)
