i was going to say no. maybe it varies from school to school, but at my college we had large lectures (didn't need books for those) and then small discussion sections (needed books for those). i think you're a first-year, correct? if so i highly doubt you'll need your books the first day of class (unless it's a language class).
i'm surprised they already gave you your syllabus, etc. in my day (i feel old now) the first two weeks of each semester were like a test run where you added & dropped classes. and we didn't get the syllabus until the first day of class.
I never even bought my books until after the first week of class. That way, you'll know if you actually need the book for class or not. Some classes say in the syllibus that you'll need the book and then you really don't. Why waste your money? The only time I ever bought my books ahead of time was my first semester of college my freshman year b/c I hadn't yet caught on to the book trick.
What kind of class is it? I think for most courses you probably won't need books in the first session. I would usually go to the bookstore to see what books were required for the course but often I wouldn't buy them until after the first few classes. That way I could figure out if I actually wanted to continue with the class and if I did if I would really need to buy the book or if I could just use a library copy instead.
I never bring books to the first class. Depending on what kind of class it is, you may not ever need to bring them (I've only ever taken liek 3 classes where we needed the book in class and those were all English classes or language classes)
I'm with Nylabelle. I didn't even buy the books until I decided if they were needed by the teacher and if I was staying in the class. Then I would buy them on half.com or amazon.com for less than the bookstores and just express them if they were needed the next week (they usually weren't)
i always bring a notebook or binder for notes, and a folder to put syllabi and whatnot. a few pens and pencils and a highlighter to note key dates in the syllabus.
also make sure you have a copy of your schedule with buildings, locations, room numbers, etc. (assuming your school is big- mine is huge)
Thanks girls. Sorry I hadn't posted earlier. I appreciate all the input. I'm going to University of Houston-Downtown. Monday is my first day! Soo excited, but not ready to study! uhh, im always having to edit! lol-- Edited by Claudia at 21:46, 2005-08-18
I know you don't want to hear this, but start studying immediately. High school was so easy for me that I rarely had to study and I was in for the biggest surprise of my life when I started college. It took me a whole year to actually learn how to study. I remember taking my first chemistry exam and studying for only a few hours, and I barely passed.
That said, good luck and have fun at college!
Oh, and I agree with the others who said not to bring your books. I rarely had to bring books to class, and sometimes you don't even need to buy the books. I agree with buying them at halfprice.com or a similar place, just make sure that if you do need the book for studying that it can be shipped to you right away. For a few classes, we only had to use the book a couple times, in which case, I went to one of the university libraries to look at it.
