Birmingham/Troy Ladies - Help!
Permalink Closed

My mom and I are going to Bham/Troy for a visit in September (it's where I grew up).  Of course, we always spend one day shopping at Somerset and Birmingham.  Are there any cute places for lunch in downtown Birmingham?  I feel like I had read that there were more choices there now.  (It was a restaurant black hole when we lived there - never understood why) We could always do Capital Grille or J.Alexanders at Somerset, but I just love being in Birmingham.

And any tips on cute boutiques would also be appreciated - it's been about two years since I have been back.

Thanks!!

well, I live in Bloomfield Hills and B'ham and Troy are right next door...  My main stops in B'ham are Anthropologie, Tender, and Imelda's closet... Really if you just park at Maple and Bates and walk east down Maple from Bates (Tender on the right, Smith and Hawken on the left) there's boutiques on bothe sides of Maple almost all the way to Woodward.  South of Maple down Old Woodward to west on Merrill to North on Pierce toward Maple there are more boutiques on both sides of the streets.  One of my favorite places to eat is sitting outside at 220 and people watching.  Streetside is good too... Those are old standbys... There's a Cosi at the corner of Maple and Old Woodward that has outdoor seating - excellent people watching there... OH and there's the Willets - on the street level there's Mitchell's seafood and a steak place next door to that - faces toward where Jacobson's men's shop used to be (it's all torn down right now - also where the Jacobson's women's shop was is now McCann Erickson Advertising) hmmm... and there's City Cellar behind the new theater on Old Woodward... here's an article http://www.detnews.com/2003/entertainment/0304/20/e09-140398.htm

This is all just off the top of my head - if I think of more I'll let you know :)

Thank you thank you thank you!  I am going to print this out and take it with me.  It is supposed to be nice this weekend, so I am hoping we can sit outside at 220, then do some serious shopping damage.  Sigh...I love Birmingham, and I can't believe I haven't been back in so long.

P.S. It still makes me sad that Jacobson's is gone....and that Hudson's is Marshall Fields.

Thanks for asking and for the great recs!  We had so much fun and the weather was SPECTACULAR!  Almost made me want to move back...I crammed a lot of activities into a few short days.  Here are the highlights:

- Headed straight to 220 Merrill from the airport on Friday and had a great dinner outside

- We ate in on Sunday night, and got dinner at Papa Joe's.  OH MY GOD, I would kill to have that store in DC.  I love that it carries Zingermanns breads!!

- Went to Ann Arbor with some friends on Saturday for tailgaiting, drinking and the Michigan game (my alma mater).  We went to Gratzi and La Dolci Vita after the game - my two favorites!

- Sunday was power shopping - we got lunch at Cosi and went to most of the stores on Maple and Woodward, then headed over to Somerset.  I actually didn't buy too much in Bham - some casual clothes at Roots, a v. cool antique chinese rice bucket from Arhaus (random, I know) for the house, some lingerie at Harps, this blouse:

sandrine top

At Somerset, I got:

Shawl Collar Cocoon Cardigan

a woven belt to wear with the sweater, and a blouse from MaxStudio.

Then it was time to figure out how to get everything back in my bags and schlep home!
