Need info from DFW Texas gals again (a little long)
Permalink Closed

So we're still working on possibly getting back to TX soon.  Hubby just had an interview this past Friday, but he may not know anything for another 6 weeks!!!!  Anyway, I'm still on the search for a place to possibly call home but I know things have changed since I last lived there 7+ years ago.

Hubby's office will be off of Preston in Plano.  I really don't think we'd want to live in Plano because of the size of it, but surrounding towns would be good.  We're still very partial to Southlake because of the great school system and the proximity of pretty much all the shopping you could want.  However, the commute from Southlake to Plano might be killer.

I've recently discovered Lovejoy ISD, which is close to Plano and was one of the few ISDs in TX to receive exemplary test scores.  I think, though, the towns feeding into it are tiny and very "country."  Don't know if that's appealing or not, but I'd like opinions.

SSSSOOOOOOOOO, finally getting to the help I need:

Since things in the Metroplex have changed and grown so much over the last few years, I haven't a clue where to look.  The commute needs to be decent, the schools need to be good, there needs to be close access to shopping (a definite must), and it needs to be a safe town.  Also, my hubby doesn't care for the size of towns like Arlington, Dallas, or Plano.  We're used to living in smaller towns here in New England and have been spoiled by the school systems.  Money isn't a HUGE issue, but we couldn't afford Highland Park or anything.  Housing costs are less there than here.  Any thoughts on good towns that meet our needs?

p.s.  Thanks for helping out in my last post on this subject!

What are the towns feeding into the Lovejoy ISD? Sorry, I am very unfamiliar with the schooling situation since I have no kids (nor plan to) so I don't know where that is exactly - trying to get an idea. I'm still excited at the prospect of you coming to the Dallas area, though!!

The towns of Lucas, Fairview, and a few neighborhoods in Allen feed into Lovejoy.  It's a very small ISD w/ only like 1000 kids.

So, do you think The Colony is just terrible, laken1?

I like it here because I think it's close to everything (5 minutes to Frisco, 10 - 15 minutes to Lewisville, Plano - 30 minutes to Dallas proper), but I don't think I would buy a house in the price range that you are looking at in my town due to resale- as a matter of fact, I'm not sure that you can find that here. Maybe further down in Little Elm. I'm not saying it's horrible, but as far as restaurants / shopping, we go elsewhere with the exception of Walmart. I have friends that live in Allen & also have been through a lot of those neighborhoods while garage saling, and there are some pretty neighborhoods there (also a great outlet mall). I understand your reluctance to live in Plano, but it is really nice & big, so you would have an ABUNDANCE of houses to chose from, I would think. I'm not familiar with the other towns you mentioned - sorry - maybe someone who has lived here longer would know.

Is there any chance of you getting down here before ya'll have to decide? Gosh, bad timing with school starting, huh?

I'm guessing I'll only go down if/when we found out if he's getting the job.  He's already gone down to check out some houses and towns, but he did it so I could avoid getting on an airplane.  I hate flying, so this is going to be difficult!

I went to school in Breckenridge w/ a guy who now lives in The Colony.  Can't remember his name right now, though.  Do you have a place on the lake?  I'd LOVE that!

No, we don't live on the lake, but i guess that is an option for you - that would be sweet! I hate to bad mouth it here, but you also have to keep in mind that i moved into the house that my husband & his ex lived in & it's a "fixer upper" so I've been fixing since I got here - maybe that factors into the fact that I'm not really happy to live here & would like to be elsewhere.

Good Lord!  I think I'd have to kill my husband if he insisted we live in his and his ex's house!  Talk about ghosts!  No wonder you don't find it that appealing!

I wish I had the patience for a fixer-upper.  But I'm a "do it all right now" kind of gal, so we'd go totally broke!  I had no idea how hard it would be to find a house in our price range.  Maybe I'm just too picky or something.

Well, he doesn't "insist" it's just the situation we find ourselves in - paying off old bills, saving money to buy something new, etc. We (I) are just sucking it up for a while until we can get what we want. Moneywise it just works for us right now so not really a lot of choice without geting into a financial mess that i'd rather not end up in, if you know what I mean!

The Colony is okay, it really has great potential and I love my neighbors!  I live here in a house my husband and I built in 2000.  Now, at the time, we expected a lot more growth to happen, and so far, the biggest things that have came to town were a Home Depot and a water park....but I shouldn't complain about the lack of activity and recreation, Frisco is such an SUV zoo on weekends!  They just got an Ikea and last Saturday evening, the traffic was a nightmare because there was also a Rough Riders baseball game on the same street and the Stonebriar mall area attracts crowds every weekend anyway.  So being able to relax and just grocery shop in my quiet little city is fine by me for now.

Sometimes I go to Lewisville for shopping too, it's not much further the other direction, and it's a little calmer.

If I could, I would live in a house near Legacy and Preston, right by my fitness center and right by all the places I usually shop in N. Plano and Frisco.

I WISH my husband worked in Plano right off Preston, instead, he's stuck at I-35 and Regal...and that's not near any neighborhood we would live.

You are in a great position to make any decision, no matter where you pick, the commute to Plano won't be that hard.  The paths (Preston Rd., G. Bush toll, N. Dallas Toll) are all pretty new, multi-laned, well maintained and easy to drive.

Well I'm actually from Southlake, so I'm of course partial to it and the school system (which educated me..hehe).  But Southlake is a good family atomosphere...close to Grapevine Lake and plenty of things to do...close to several malls...15 minutes from Northeast Mall..which has almost everything...20-25 minutes from the Dallas Galleria...and Southlake Town Square is growing fast..they're putting in a movie theatre as we speak

It's also 15 minutes from DFW airport...and close to 114, 121, 183, 35, etc. most of the major highways

THere's also not a lot of crime compared to Dallas...actually most of the crime comes from domestic disputes/abuse...which is still very unfortunate

I'd also look at Colleyville which is a great town...close to everything as well

LoMish - which development/street are you in?  Any neighborhoods that you can recommend looking in?

I live in Cross Timber Hills, which is one of the older subdivisions of Southlake..it was there before the town really began to grow.  It's a great family/community neighborhood...there are always people walking their dogs, walking with their kids, playing around in the yard,etc...and it's probably less expensive than some of the newer more upscale neighborhoods.  I also like Meyers Meadow which is off 1709 and Peytonville (accross from Carroll Sr. High)..and South Ridge Lakes which is just down the road from there. They both are great family neighborhoods too.  I don't know much about the newer ones b.c. i am not home a lot now (college in Iowa)...but I hope this helps.
